What's the best remedy for acid reflux & indigestion ?

Recommended Posts

The last I heard, it was a breath test, though I think they can do a blood test too to look for antibodies to H. pylori.

Y` see, it was all going so well then.

Right up to the point where you mentioned a Blood test...

And guess what I think of blood tests...

I`m a coward, I know, but I see it as part of my charm.

I'm an utter coward too, so I'm with you on the fear of blood tests thing. However, I had to have a panal of them done about 18 months ago, which were repeated six weeks later. The first lot were done by the practice nurse and the second by the GP.

Now, bear in mind that the last time I had a blood sample taken (to measure my antibody titre to the Hep B vaccination), I fainted from sheer terror. You can imagine how filled with delight I was at the prospect of having several tubes taken at the same time.

I can honestly say that I didn't feel a thing on either occasion. Once I'd explained to the nurse how I'd fainted during my last blood-letting, she was incredibly supportive. By the time the GP took the samples, I really wasn't so nervous. Still couldn't bring myself to watch the needle going in though...

Don't worry!

Oh I`m not worrying.

I`m seriously not worrying at all.

Guess why?

Heheh.

Oddly. When I was with my son for his last days I had absolutely no problems with medical things, I helped change the many tubes that were snaking out of him, I assisted with injections, I was even allowed to get the mucous out of his throat with the vacuum tube. I had absolutely no problems at all.

Its wierd how one copes when one really has to, isnt it?

However.

The chances of me being in a position like that are so slim that theyre almost receding into infinity. I`ve never been in hospital, I`m disgustingly healthy apart form the indigestion and my sight, so what can I say?

Well the doc didnt mention ulcers, but told me that if I didnt get relief from the pills after a month or so then he`d consider a visit to the hospital and an endoscopy. That was several months ago and a few months ago he mentioned "weaning" me off of them. Then he mentioned the endoscopy. I said no the pills are fine, he said the pills are dangerous if used for too long, I said to get me to have an endoscopy would take a team of big game hunters with tranquillizer darts just to get me to stay still and he tried to scare me with talk of cancer and peritonitis and people dying of ulcers and in the end we came to an arrangement. I quit smoking, which I did, and he`d leave me alone for a while.

He still nags but as I mentioned before, it just isnt going to happen.

Hi Jabberwocky, I'm not going to call you a wuss or chicken, as I empathise completely. I'm not in the position of needing an endoscopy, but have observed several and vowed I will never have one unless I am put under a general anaesthetic. This would be worth discussing with your GP/Consultant after a referral, I'm sure they'd do it if you refused the procedure otherwise. Unfortunately it will probably need doing at some stage. As well as the risk of oesophageal cancer from acid reflux, you definitely don't want to have a stomach ulcer which perforates. Although I have nothing wrong gastrically, I'm going to have to have a cardiac catheterisation (awake) at some point which Im not particularly looking forward to!

As for blood tests, I've had one terrible experience which gave me a bit of a phobia, but now have had several very good nurses do it and have no problem with it. Hint: ALWAYS ask a phlebotomist or nurse to do it, GPs are usually rubbish because they don't get much practice!

I'm very sorry to hear about your son. :(

Well its all academic to me cos to even get me close to a hospital would take a team of big game hunters with bloody big guns and LOTS of tranquillizers in them.

Would you believe I trained to be a nurse? See now why I failed?:hihi:

My wife had this really bad, last year or is it 2 now.......turned out she had a hiatuss hernia. She had a Nissen Fundoplication, keyhole style, basically the top of her stomach was wrapped round the bottom of her oesophagus to create a new "valve"and since then she's been fine. Unfortunately, she isnt allowed to be sick, ever! So antisickness tablets are needed as and when.

Also she cant burp so all fizzy drinks have to be stirred to within and inch of its life till its more or less flat.

Best to get it checked by a doctor it could turn into a serious thing if left untreated. I had to use Pantaloc to treat my problem.... worked wonders. Otherwise the acid eats your esphogus and causes ulcers. It's difficult to treat after that because of possible bleeding.
