Public Image Ltd would not be first on many people's list of likely Eurovision Song Contest entrants.

But the band John Lydon formed after the Sex Pistols split in 1978 is one of six hoping to represent Ireland in Liverpool on 13 May.

The country's winner will be chosen by a national jury made up of music experts, an international jury and a public vote on Ireland's The Late Late Show on RTE from 21:30 GMT on Friday.

'I have to do this'

The sound of Lydon's song - a love letter to his wife who has Alzheimer's - was not what I expected.

"It's very hard to be away from her but I have to do this," the most famous man in punk tells me in his dressing room. "I have to bring awareness to this problem. I miss her like mad and she was talking to me last night on the iPad and she was crying."

The poignant lyrics about happier times are genuinely touching and will resonate with viewers. Lydon believes he is in a better position than most, caring for Nora, as some "just can't bear the weight" of looking after someone with dementia.

Awww - John Lydon is a very intelligent and articulate guy,  I've heard him on radio at least twice,  the first time the interviewer asked him if he still swore,  he answered 'I have a vocabulary' - last time he was talking about his wife,  how he had to wait on her hand and foot,  he was amazing.

Absolutely ....the way he speaks of his wife and how he's devoted himself to looking after her ...he is a top top man.....looking after someone suffering from dementia is both hard work and heartbreaking all rolled into one...

My bold.

Fair enough, he started out as a bit of an idiot but don't be fooled by the appearance.  Lydon's got a lot more to him than most of the celebrity ignoramuses, that most follow on social media these days.

Plus he's still got that twinkle in his eyes that say he could still erupt at any minute to a daft interviewer.

I'm not keen on his PiL music but I really hope he gets to perform in the Eurovision song contest. I look after my o/h who has Alzheimer's as well as other serious conditions. John Lydon has really brought the problems of caring for someone with dementia to the publics attention. I think he deserves a medal. More so than some of the so called celebrities who have got them. He probably wouldn't accept one though.

Saw him on his speaking tour last year, he's a great orator and always worth listening to, we need more John Lydon's in the world. His stories of his devotion to his wife bought a tear to many an old punks eyes.

MSM  headline "Eurovision 2023: John Lydon fails in bid to be Ireland's act for Liverpool".

Never mind,  I would have tuned in for the first time in years.
