The 5th gear program on TV did a crash test of one, and compared it with a conventional small car (maybe a corsa, but I'm not sure). They ran into an angled wall at high speed. The shell of the smart stood up well to the crash in comparison with the other car. However, as it was at such a high speed, the occupants would have been killed in either car. It did show the strength of the smart, though.

 

The above didn't address the stability of it, though.

For what it's worth, the Smart ForTwo performs very well in a crash with a larger car:

I'd rather be in a new Smart than something like a 20 year old Astra for example.

 

I'd rather be on the bus than be in an Astra!!

It was a corsa. I remember 5th gear crashing a lot of renaults, including the modus, but not in this case.
