Have The Regulation Son The Need For Traffic Lights As Roadworks Changed ?

There haven’t been any changes that I’m aware of.

Whoever is working in the street usually has a discussion with officers of the highway authority ( usually the council ) to decide what form of traffic management is appropriate for the location.

It’s horses for courses really. Safety is the primary concern.

A “give and take” arrangement where traffic on one side gives way to the other is only usually appropriate on a side road with very light traffic.

Even, these days, disproportionately......

But, if roadwork take up no more room than a legally parked car (in some cases less...) why do they need traffic lights ?

That's not actually true though is it P1 ?

If it was there would be a blanket 30mph, or even 20mph, speed limit on all roads (and that would save far more lives than these traffic lights ever would).

OMG this is getting ridiculous.

There is a set of three way (maybe even four way ?) set of lights at the junction of Worral Road / Dykes Hall Rd which take forever to change.

And for much of that waiting time there are no cars on some of the roads under the multiway control. They do not need multi way control lights there, it's not that busy......

Obviously I have never actually seen anyone working on the hole in the road, but I am pretty sure they would not have had 3way/4way control lights there 10 years ago. In fact the multi way lights work against themselves sometimes as the junction sometimes gets blocked up when cars cannot clear the roadworks, as very nearly happened today.

I do not know if the regulations have been upgraded (not......) but there are definitely more roadwork traffic lights (as in places they would not have bothered with them 10 to 20 years ago), and far more multi way lights around than there used to be.

Nobody does.

There’s a three year tailback at Dykes Hall Road. The Red Cross are sending emergency parcels to drivers stranded without Google Maps, who are unable to plan an alternative route.

Stood waiting to cross the road just down from your shop recently, took about 10 minutes for the lights to change so I gave up waiting .. what a mess they've made of Hillsborough corner. Surprised you're still there with the clean air zone imminent.

Clean air is overrated anyway.

What do you think the effect might be of restricting access to an inner ring road.

I’d avoid Hillsborough. Too many tram type traffic restrictions.

Your trolling hypocrisy is getting repetitive. Literally a few hours after telling people to avoid driving there.

Where are you off on holiday this year, Leonardo? Biking holiday in Dorset is it, with lashings of ginger beer, or South of France again by car

He runs, presumably, a specialist aerial shop in Hillsborough.  I will go out on a limb here and say the impact of a zone a couple of miles away that can be circumvented will be nil, unless all his customers are travelling to his little shop in non compliant buses, vans and HGVs from beyond it.
