The organisation led by the mayor elect, Oliver Coppard, which is responsible for a number of things in the region including transport.  But the link that you provided takes us to a website at the foot of which is a link to- guess what?- SYPTE! https://sypte.co.uk/
 Share this content via...
dutch   68 #27 Posted June 30, 2022 Would not mind lesser or fuller buses from environmental aspects to reduce pollution. But its all about money and profits again what seems to be the real focus. Council SYMCA will be only worse than SYPTE like bus driver very clearly said. But I can say one thing and that is council does not give or renew disability passes as easy as SYPTE did.
 Share this content via...

I knew of an individual a few years ago who was given a disabled with carer pass purely because she REFUSED to learn basic English despite being resident here for 10+ years but in the same financial period refused several truly disabled applicants for "not meeting criteria"
 Share this content via...

I don't know why they were privatised in the first place, but surely this is a lesson in why they shouldn't have been. Let#s bring them back inder the control of the council, provide a public service and keep control.
 Share this content via...

OK, how much extra would you like to pay for that to happen for the current service to be maintained, either in increased fare costs or extra taxation?  The world is a much different place from when local authorities ran bus companies, the social care burden these days is off the scale. Also look at how much TfL in London keeps asking for in terms of bailouts. Oh and Covid happened which has changed working patterns probably for ever. Edited July 1, 2022 by HeHasRisen
 Share this content via...

Council tax would rocket, they would still have to find the drivers - which commercial operators can't, so would they - unlikely. Not 100% certain of the figures, but from memory, TfL have been bailed out to the tune of £6-8 million over the past financial year, and they are still screaming for more, and reducing services. Of course a private company has to make a profit, otherwise they go out of business and disappear - along with the service. The trouble with them being a council provided 'service' is that they are then used politically, and 'we' still have no 'control', and they are still subject to Traffic Commissioner regulation.
