I just did a quick Google, WW2 cost the UK 33% of GDP, we are now in debt to the tune of 90%.

Debt is a normal thing for modern Governments, the corrupt ones spend, spend and spend, they let the next government pay it back.

I'm not surprised. This government have borrowed more than anyone for quantatitive easing, covid epidemic and the War in Ukraine. I doubt they'll be the ones paying it back. Is it OK for the Tories to borrow, but bad when it's Labour who do it?

Different circumstances for each government.  Don't remember labour borrowing through a pandemic.

You need to let this obsession with the Tories go.

Every government ends up with some crisis or other to deal with. Last Labour government had the banking crash, another one had a major recession. Each blames the other for the mess they have to clear up. It's all short termism and tit for tat bickering instead of working together for the good of the country.

That's another reason why I think PR would be a better system. But after centuries of adversarial politics I'm not sure they could bring themselves to work together. Too many big male egos at work.

Ugh men are all horrible aren't they?

Each party has female MP's at work too.

Don't be a dinosaur and blame all the 'Men' on the countries and various parties own problems.

Mainly Tories like Boris and the old Etonians. Born to rule...

Only if you vote for them.

But human nature being what it is, nobody wants to give up free stuff and benefits, so it goes on.

No matter what they call themselves, conservatives, tories, anybody who doesn't support the welfare state in the U.K. has zero chance of getting elected, until the money runs out, interest rates rise, and the bills have to be paid.

If socialism actually worked, there'd never be another right wing politician elected anywhere in the world.

There'd be no need!  :)

Isn't socialism all around us?

Labour Mayor's and council's employing their own staff, instead of just putting work out to tender. The NHS employing its own staff.

Johnson threatened to privatise the passport office, so I guess that is in public ownership.

We do have failing NHS dentists, but only because the government are blind to its problems and their lack of funding.

It's not free stuff, it's paid for with our money gained from the taxes that we pay!

We should have a say in what it's spent on, and be able to see the results.

Like all insurance it's supposed to bring peace of mind for the pitfalls in life.

I have to say that having paid my taxes for 50 years, (and saved) I am getting to an age where I might need a bit of help, and for the first time in my life I am getting seriously worried because I know it isn't there any more. I have seen things in the NHS for example that you wouldn't believe, in what is supposed to be a relatively rich, civilised country.

If Capitalism worked and the rich weren't sucking up all the wealth by not paying their due, we wouldn't be in this position, and it would be a fair system. But it's not.

No, I'm sorry.

You have "unsustainable" (Guardian) National Debt spiraling out of control.

Your stuff is given to you, on credit, by borrowing from future generations, yet unborn (if the inevitable financial crisis doesn't come sooner).

Ever hear of "taxation without representation"?

If they ever did raise enough taxes to pay for what they spend, you would all be in the poor house.

Another Argentina or Greece (without the weather) :)

Explain please.

I don't like Boris Johnson for many reasons, I make no secret of it, not least because i think he's making a mess of this country.

You and others don't like Jeremy Corbyn, and slag him off at every opportunity and have done ever since he appeared on the scene.

However I believe it would be in everyone's interest if politicians of whatever party could work together for the long term good of the country.

So what?

You don’t like the Tories, full stop . If they were to give everyone in the country one thousand pounds, you would say Labour would give them one thousand and one pound. Tit for tat

I have voted Tory in the past.

I vote for whoever I think has the best policies and people. I am a floating voter.

I think this government is the worst we have ever had, (though it only just pips the Cameron government.)

I think the evidence is all around in the way this country has fallen, and split into the have's and have nots.

It is corrupt and full of corrupt people.

It is destroying all that is good in this country.

It's a disgrace
