It's a MONUMENTAL STATUE to honour our Great Queen Victoria,

during who's reign this WONDERFUL 'STEEL CITY' of ours became 'world renowned'

Queen Victoria visit to Sheffield 21st May 1897

News Report  'Quote'

.....  the queen was to celebrate her 78th Birthday 3 days after this visit on the 24th May 1897.

.....  The Queen never left her carriage at any time during the visit, but the reason being for this

was her health. She was more or less immobile as a result of heart disease.    This was the reason why!

TOWN HALL SQUARE.

The Victoria Jubilee Monolith was erected in the Square in 1887, but was removed  in 1905

and replaced by the Queen Victoria Statue, which was unveiled by Princess Beatrice  11-5-1905.

They both now reside in Endcliffe Park.

Thanks, just found out it was at Moorhead where Furnival Gate is now and re-sited to Endcliffe around 1960. No wonder I never noticed it as a kid (I was 13 in 1960) as it was about 60 feet in the air.
