New Bar Ecclesall Road The Dark Horse

A new bar has opened on Ecclesall Road, opposite side of the road from The Banner Cross and a bit further up. I think it used to be Lloyds Bank. 

 

They've done a tremendous job of doing it out. Very modern, and lovely decor. All wooden surfaces, which can make it seem a bit loud when busy. 

 

Anyways, good choice of decent beers and friendly staff. They do food too, but we didn't get to try anything on our first visit.   Another good micropub in the fine city of Sheffield.

On the cheaper ‘hilly’ part, I can recall when there were only 2 pubs on Ecclesall Road, these being the Nursery Tavern and the Banner Cross Hotel.

Another one coming soon too, just up from the Dark Horse. Being opened by the owners of the Itchy Pig at Broomhill. Not been in the Dark Horse yet, but aiming for Saturday.

I wish them both well, obviously SCC has eventually realised that we’re now in the 21st century.

Sorry I didn’t realise that the council don’t have to grant permission for licenced premises anymore, you learn all sorts on this forum. 😉

I am unaware of the background. Have they been refusing permission in that area? Or is it merely a case that nobody wanted to open round there.

Looks like Itchy Pig Eccy Road branch is open... ran past it last night. Might have to pop in later then drop into The Dark Horse.

Went in the new Itchy Pig on Friday, it's well decent, a bit bigger than the Broomhill one and a really nice selection of craft keg + cask beers.

 

Went in Dark Horse too, it's nice (not so much a beer enthusiast's bar though IMHO).

What about the old Pomona Hotel - that was only about 100 yards from the Nursery.
