crookesey 585 #26 Posted January 22, 2022 If the Old Queen’s Head found itself to be in a position that ‘didn’t suit’, you just wonder what might happen to it.
 Share this content via...

FIRETHORN1 53 #28 Posted January 22, 2022 At the end of the day, anywhere that is a popular, well-used, thriving and popular business is much less likely to be closed down than somewhere who is struggling for customers and struggling to make ends meet. Of course it's sad when a local pub or other local landmark closes down for good - but if local people used it more frequently and kept it operating profitably, it would have a better chance of surviving. Exactly 👍 Look at the state of the Old Town Hall which has been empty since 1997 because of ridiculous conservation rules We're lucky its not burnt down yet
 Share this content via...

crookesey 585 #33 Posted January 24, 2022 The CC has very few pre Victorian buildings, I feel that the few that are still left standing should be preserved, obviously the powers that be disagree.
 Share this content via...

I understand what you mean but not every building can be kept just because its from the Victorian era. No doubt a hundred & odd years ago our Victorian equivalents would have been moaning because some of them wanted to demolish Georgian building to put up 'modern' Victorian eyesores? At the end of the day, looking at the developments that's proposed around where the Yorkshireman's Arms stands, it would have been demolished at some point anyway. It started to go down hill & lost its way & regular customer base, when those who ran the Beauchief Hotel took it over & changed the name to Lion's Lair, trying to turn it into some high end, high priced, gastro-pub. Come to think of it my maternal grandparents, who were born in the late Victorian era, were brought up in very old ‘two up two down’ terraced houses that they hated. Andy C 83 #36 Posted January 25, 2022 (edited) The council compulsory purchased the Yorkshireman along with many other buildings in the area as part of the "Heart of the City" regeneration and redevelopment programme. The CPOs in the area were a few years ago now and places like the Yorkshireman and Henry's were rented out to operators on a short term basis until redevelopment was due to begin. This is phase 2 of the current wave of development. Read more about the projects here >> https://heartofsheffield.co.uk/ Generally it should be positive in terms of improving the City Centre and breathing life back into some neglected parts, however it is sad to see only token gestures being made to heritage and history, generally with in many cases facades being kept but the actual building being demolished.
