What about the typefaces he designed? Gill Sans is one of the world's most widely used typefaces. There's a good article on the difficulties of staging exhibitions of Gill's (and other problematical artists') work in Eric Gill: can we separate the artist from the abuser?. Exactly , attack the abuser , not the art .
 Share this content via...

So, all things considered, and taking into account the above facts, and trying to approach this matter objectively, I’m very much gearing towards being very strongly on the fence about this. Unless - like Garry Glitter, if you accept his art he'd be liable to collect royalties from it . So - when all the statues have gone, all the pubs named the 'Duke of York' and anything our dear little snowflakes out there can muster an objection to have gone, what have we left ? Keep safe out there .
 Share this content via...

Baron99 779 #12 Posted January 16, 2022 Along the lines of what Hackney Lad has posted, deplore the abuser not the art. If you agree with the removal of the Eric Gill statues at the BBC, then you'll also be pressing for the the removal of the Stations of the Cross at Westminster Abbey. Really this clamor all of a sudden to remove things from the past because they now infringe sensitivities that have only surface in the past few years is ridiculous. Do we get rid of paintings by such as Carrivagio because he was a convicted murderer? Get a grip! You'd expect such actions to be committed by extreme totalitarian regimes. Oh by the way. Mein Kampf is still available on line & at any good book shop, even in Germany. So no book burning there anymore then. Maybe their 'snowflakes' are a bit more grown up?
