Sheffield City Centre - The Future

Why do I think it's ill-thought through?

I can only apologise if I've got the wrong end of the stick here, but having just had a quick look through your posting history, it would appear that you seem to 'specialise' in defending posts regarding all things council related.

Now a much more cynical person than myself might suspect that it's because you are in some way employed by them.

Assuming that to be the case, then I find it unbelievable that someone in that position is asking a member of the public on an internet forum why an idea is ill-thought through.

If I'm wrong and it isn't ill-thought through, then shouldn't you be telling us all why it isn't, and why it's a perfectly feasible idea?

I know it's hard for some people to get their head around the idea that not everything is the councils fault and that not everyone who defends the council at times is an employee with 'I ❤️ Sheffield Council' tattooed on their chest, but you'll have to give it a try because I can assure I'm not now nor ever have been an SCC employee. I just get sick and tired (as a lot of other people do) of the constant belief in some very narrow-minded Sheffield folk that the council controls everything and everything therefore must be the fault of the council. It's tiresome and in fact it's also damaging since it tends to distract people from the other issues which also drag Sheffield down.

There's lots of fair criticisms of Sheffield Council's planning department and their overall record and attracting business & investment. They seem to have a reputation for being difficult to work with, too controlling, not allowing investors/developers lead & direct development and generally being slow. That comes from a few people I know in the private sector involved with architecture, property development, etc., etc.. A fair reputation? No idea. It seems it, from the glacial pace of development in Sheffield and the general lacklustre state of Sheffield's retail and office sectors. But personally I'm not involved in either end of that relationship so I don't know.

Is the outline proposal posted above feasible? As feasible as any other live music venue, street food market, park, etc. As I say, all these things are quite commonplace in other UK cities, in fact elsewhere in Sheffield city centre itself, so there's definitely interest in them. Would this one work, be economically viable? No idea. Someone with better knowledge of the figures would have to answer that. The point here though is that you're not really in a position to just laugh it off. Despite what you say, you are being cynical. The John Lewis site requires open minds and a variety of ideas.

HMMMMMM...

I think it should be turned into a mosque.

Would probably guarantee better numbers than John Lewis used to see in it's latter days.

I've quoted your reply for future reference (we wouldn't want it to go missing).

With respect to the bit in bold...

... I'm sure that many people on here will be surprised that someone who has been told of what it's like to work with SCC from people who appear to have first-hand experience of working with them, is still prepared to put so much effort into defending their decisions.

Hmmm... Indeed! :suspect:

I like your reasoned replies AndrewC thanks. Some of the other contributions bring to mind pigeons and chess.

'Proposed new development in Leeds' - brilliant, why are the Council & planners so far sighted, wish we could have something similar here but it could never happen

'Same proposed new development in Sheffield' - madness, stupid, will never work, city centre is full of spice zombies, get rid of them, give us free parking. why are Leeds City Council & planners so far sighted etc etc

Rinse & repeat (preferably with free parking & a bullet train to Meadowhead)

Yep there is definitely some truth in that.

Although from looking at various Facebook post commenters from Yorkshire Post, Yorkshire live, Manchester Evening News, Birmingham Mail, Eastern Daily Press, London Evening Standard..... the same sort of petty, unjust criticism, whinging and moaning about any new project seems to be across the land.

Brit mentality.

Free parking? Have you tried parking in Leeds? It is very expensive but is also well used. I don't think the price of parking is a factor.

Keep an open mind. First thing they teach you at induction at Sheffield City Council.

https://www.thestar.co.uk/business/new-road-in-sheffield-city-centre-for-shuttle-bus-set-to-launch-this-summer-3707106

The Freebee bus is to return which clearly SCC will hope revive parts of the city centre.

You remove 30 plus bus routes passing through & close to one of the city centre's main retail, associated business & work areas & intrest in the area drops dramatically.  Well who would have thought it?
