Because some,in fact many, choose to believe that social distancing and a mask on some occasions offer a further protection from viruses.

As for useless masks ,the more effective ones were initially unobtainable, but are now readily available.

Wrongly believe, I've corrected it for you.

They may be available but you don't see people wearing them, and people with facial hair or even stubble in the area where the mask is supposed to fit to the face are wasting their time, they are comfort blankets, no more no less.

In Trumps last week in office there were getting just under 900,000 a day done.  Americans knew the vaccine roll out was coming before the election.

That was January

If it’s a comfort blanket to the vulnerable then a purpose is being served.

They will not disappear overnight as anybody who has seen their popularity amongst many Asian tourists in Europe for years.

So wearing something that you think is giving you protection but isn't is a good thing??? Really??? Are they not more likely to go into busy places and closer to people as they are convinced the mask is protecting them? Negative effect and probably explains why places with mask mandates still had rising case numbers.

We don't really need compulsory face masks, says expert
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-60461378
While many people will choose to continue wearing face masks, Prof Bell says he doesn't think wearing them "indefinitely is really going to help".

The professor of medicine at Oxford University says masks "didn't really help" with the more transmissible Omicron variant and while they probably reduced transmission, they could not prevent it.

“I don’t think mandating mask-wearing is necessarily a sensible thing," he tells BBC Radio 4's World at One programme.

On the possibility of more dangerous variants emerging, Prof Bell says he is "pretty confident" new variants will emerge, which could be more serious than Omicron, but that the immunity from vaccines will probably continue to be effective against severe disease.

He says we shouldn't stop thinking about how to prepare for future pandemics, which he describes as "inevitable" and more likely to happen in the next 10 years than the next 100 years.

And other experts say differently.

So individuals will make their own minds up for their own reasons and sometimes out of concern for the mental well being of others.

Or to line their pockets.

@topQuite possibly

Very much like the fashion for quality control standards ,risk assessments and other rules and regulations which monetise basic common sense rules.
