Does Anyone Remember The Psychedelic Artist Ramases?

Recommended Posts

I've only just discovered Ramases, who was born in Sheffield in 1934 and called Barrington Frost.

In the mid to late 60's, he and his wife (known as Selket) moved to Sheffield for a few years, living at Westwick Crescent, Beauchief\Greenhill and he modelled his home on a Roman temple.

They recorded two albums, the first was backed by the band who would shortly become 10cc. Their music is available on Spotify and Amazon Music, I'd imagine that it's also on other streaming services too.

Dressing in silk robes and with a shaved head, he would have been quite a sight and to say he was unusual and intriguing man would be an understatement, sadly he passed away in 1976.

His wife, Selket is still around, in fact, she made her first visit in over 40 years to Sheffield this year to see one of the "Bears of Sheffield" that had been designed and named after one of their songs - https://unltdbusiness.com/band-behind-the-bear-selket-visits-sheffield/

You can find more about him and Selket: https://ramases.wordpress.com and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramases

So little appears to be known about him - I've lived in and around Sheffield all my life and knew nothing about him until a couple of days ago.

It would be brilliant to find someone who knew him either from his early days as Barrington or indeed later as Rameses.

Can’t help you. I’ve never heard of him either but he was plainly an artiste, not an artist.

I've been a fan of the music of  Ramases & Selket for many years - sadly never got to meet the fellow though.  My internet searches have only turned up evidence of one concert, supporting Uriah Heep in Slough (27 February 1971)

Selket (aka his wife, Dorothy) made a series of four YouTube videos recounting their life together:

Episode 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TlLCVcdcFU

Episode 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAyfLFXTkKE

Episode 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohIh9xfwRGg

Episode 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxsY3Vy1ip0

Jim, technically, you are correct, but the term "Musical Artist" or "Artist" for short, is used throughout the world, for example, https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/100-greatest-artists-147446/
