Towsure   10 #2 Posted October 28, 2021 Hi, you don't "need" caravan insurance, legally. It's not a legal necessity for your caravan to be insured separately from your car however you should technically inform your car insurance company that you have "modified" your car by fitting a towbar. If you tow without a specific caravan insurance policy and were to hit someone with your caravan, the car insurance would cover the third party aspect but any other things bundled like accident recovery etc most likely wouldn't so if you were unlucky enough to be involved in any kind of incident you might find yourself out of pocket significantly - and fully comp car insurance wouldn't cover costs of repair or replacement to your caravan. Also if something happened when the caravan was not being towed (say for instance the brakes failed whilst it was uncoupled and rolled down a hill and caused damage) then you would be personally liable if not covered by a separate policy In short, it's not a legal requirement but you are taking on the responsibility of incurred costs other than 3rd-party. Breakdown cover is another thing to watch for too...
