Sheffield City Centre Now! what a mess

Recommended Posts

just been into Sheffield to drop the missus to a business meeting , easier than her trying to park close to where she wanted to be as we all know thats not going to happen in Sheffield? so tried to get to division st from Arundel gate well what a joke, dead ends, more pedestrian areas, one ways, no right or left turns, narrow passages barely fit for a car and a stuck lorry for 10 mins.  no wonder the place is empty. anyone else had issues around division st and coles.

If the truth were known the council detest privately owned businesses making money in their left wing wonderland. You get what you vote for citizens of Sheffield, make of it what you may.

Turn right at the end of Arundel Gate, round to charter Square first right and there is a huge car park within a 1-minute walk from Division Street.

Alternatively, you could follow the main arterial road up from West bar, turn left onto Rockingham Street, cross over West Street and park up anywhere which again will be a 1-minute walk onto Division Street.

Further alternative you could simply enter charter row from the main roundabout, first left to Eldon Street and pull up anywhere which again will be a 1 minute walk onto Division Street.

Talk about making a drama out of nothing.  Just looks like another pathetic excuse to do a bit of slagging off of the city centre.

What city centre? Practically ever retail unit of interest has closed, not many cities the size of Sheffield would lose a John Lewis.

1) Why did you try to get to Division Street from Arundel Gate? It's on the far side of the very centre of town from Arundel Gate. Imagine driving to the main entrance of Meadowhall then complaining that you can't drive through the middle of the shopping centre to Marks & Spencers. Division Street is (easily) accessible from Ecclesall Road roundabout > Charter Row > Rockingham Street.

2) The pedestrian areas have been very busy all weekend, and - give or take the working from home situation at the moment - I imagine it's fairly busy around town during the week too. But cars aren't allowed in those pedestrianised bits, so it's no wonder you didn't see anyone.

I'm not going to try and convince anyone that Sheffield city centre is a patch on Leeds or Manchester for shopping & office jobs, but honestly, it is nonsense that no one goes there (there's 10,000s of residents for a start), and frankly, a multitude of car parks/drop-off points are easily accessible from the ring-road - you just need to do a few seconds journey planning. It shouldn't surprise anyone in the year 2021 that you aren't allowed to drive a car through the middle of one of the biggest cities in the country.

That great oxymoron of Sheffield life that so many folk love to exhibit: that they 'never go to town anymore', yet come on Sheffield Forum every 5 minutes to tell us how terrible town is these days.

The irony of you trying to tell us no one uses the city, in a post that begins with you telling us you took your partner to meet someone in the city for a business meeting. Wow.

I mean, this pandemic thingy might be the reason a lot of shops have shut. Just a hunch, mind.

If John Lewis is the only retail unit of interest to you then yes, every retail unit of interest has closed.

Not many cities the size of Sheffield, no, but when a brand new one in Birmingham closes, you know that maybe it isn't entirely a Sheffield issue.

Meanwhile, The Moor is pretty much full apart from the old Debenhams, and as we all know, Sheffield's Debenhams is the only Debenhams which closed recently. Definitely.

Retail - yes, it's very important to a lot of people, and for a lot of people the only reason to come to Sheffield city centre. But for a lot of people, it isn't. We really need to stop this one-dimensional condemnation of Sheffield just because it's retail core isn't up to the standards of Leeds & Manchester. It's so utterly negative and boresome.

Birmingham lost their branch quite spectacularly and it was far more prestige and newer than the one in Sheffield.  The shiny new Leeds one certainly wasnt thriving last time I saw it, neither in fact was their flagship Oxford Street store when I was down there the other month.

There are still plenty of shops in our city centre and unless you have been walking around blind for the past couple of years you will also notice a massive amount of development and investment that is currently ongoing.

There is more to a city than just shops.

Now back on topic about the supposed impossible road system which thousands and thousands of drivers manage perfectly well everyday.

If finding it difficult, park up and walk (in 9 minutes) or get a taxi.

If unsure, or new to a city centre you plan ahead and remember all City Centres change regularly.

Streetviews are great but often out of date so double check with the AA etc.

I would never dream of driving into a city I was unfamiliar with without doing the slightest bit of research first.

A few years ago I had the task of dropping something off at a bar in Nottingham. Looked to be buried deep within the mainly pedestrianised section of the city and Google Maps didnt make it clear if a turn was permitted, in the end I ended up emailing their Transport department to get some clarity.

Town  used to be brilliant but now you have retail parks, centretainments, big supermarkets all easy access and ample car parking all  on the outskirts infact on the doorstep why travel.

So no different to any other town or city centre then really.
