Jeffrey Shaw   90 #1 Posted October 11, 2021 Longer-standing members may recall that the Local Government Act 1972 came into force on 1 April 1974, creating the county of South Yorkshire and- with it- South Yorkshire County Council. SYCC was abolished in 1985 although the County was not. On 17 September this yea, however, it was announced that the 'Sheffield City Region' had been officially re-branded as the 'South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority' [SYMCA]. This brings together the Metropolitan Councils of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield- plus the private sector through the Local Enterprise Partnership. The Mayor's title changed to 'Mayor of South Yorkshire'. The integration of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive into SYMCA is to continue. As yet, however, its website remains https://sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/  Thanks to Eric Wilson of the Sheffield Omnibus Enthusiasts Society, who tells us this. Tony   10 #2 Posted October 12, 2021 May God help us all.  More government, not less.  More nooks and crannies for the politically overenthusiastic to plant a flag in the name of inward looking dogma and the mismanagement that follows. Jeffrey Shaw   90 #4 Posted October 12, 2021 (edited) Equally, though, all that's happened is effectively a re-establishment of SYCC under the name of SYMCA. Even if powers shift from SCC to SYMCA, the powers devolved from Central Government are unchanged as yet. Note that Greater Manchester and West Midlands have rather more devolution. sheffbag   227 #5 Posted October 13, 2021 This was announced some time ago. Im not calling Dan or his "pr" team egocentric but South Yorkshire is the only combined authority or area governed by a mayor to have the word "Mayoral" in the title. It does give the humorous acronym of (S)YMCA though so cue memes of the Village People  The SYPTE integration has been on the agenda for a long time. It was certain after a report commissioned by SCR about the PTE said that the PTE had too many levels of management and would be better run under......SCR control (adding another layer of management)
 Share this content via...
