Different with us who were given 7.5 entitlement with our licences, then moved on to HGV's.

Many would start off with 3.5. next thing, you were towing stuff about before upgrading on to HGV's.

Restrictions (about to be altered) who and at what age could tow must have hampered 'our' younger generation getting into the driving game.

 

What happened to all the 'Forces' lads who obtained their Hazzard driving licences while serving?

 

Can't wait for all the 'Qualified' lorry drivers from abroad to come back, do miss them pulling out blind onto roundabouts and running red lights (especially coming off at motorways).

Politicians are missing the point and a great opportunity with completely wrong solutions  to the driver crisis.

This will make our roads even more dangerous than they already are.

Find alternatives to needing the fuel instead.

Driver shortage is not just something to do with Foreign drivers going back,  there is also Covid to consider, last year thousands couldn't do HGV driving courses.

There was an old timer on the radio the other day, recently retired and glad of it, saying how the job had changed over his long career.

Unpleasant employers,Tachographs, restrictions, legislation and all sorts of paperwork, having to live and sleep in the cab, and sleep in lay-bys when they used to be  put up in friendly B&Bs. Long stays away from family, unhealthy and expensive fast food, no time for any leisure, and the loneliness of the road. All for not particularly good pay. 

 

He was glad to be out of it, and wasn't at all surprised there was a shortage of drivers. Having to fork out 3 - 4K for training, and then pay out annually for CPC licence etc also made it hard to recruit. Drivers from abroad have also realised they're actually better off working in their home countries rather than coming here. So this crisis is likely to be with us for quite a while.

A lot of long distance didn't bother with b&b's, they would sleep in the Wagons and claim lodge.
