As far as I know there is only Sheffield that sounds a world war 2 air raid siren at 1pm every day.

Do we do that?

You could just admit you were talking nonsense rather than throwing insults around.

If you can't beat them, join them: given you are from Pitsmoor I assume you struggled to gain a single GCSE?

What an appalling thing to say !

we do. For some reason it goes un noticed by many. Stand outside Orchard square entrance at 1pm and you will hear it.

It is a siren used as time signal outside HL Brown, there has been on there for nearly 150 years.

As 'local time' was originally derived by sundials and therefore varied across the UK it became necessary for a more standard  time. Eventually it was the railway that needed and enabled an accurate time across the UK. Both chronographs and the electric telegraph brought the 'time'  here.

In 1880 a law was passed to make GMT the standard time across the UK.

OR

The smoke was thick in Sheffield you could not use a sundial.

OR

The Town Hall clock was too dirty to see.

OR

People wanted to know what the time was in Cleethorpes- which just happens to be the same as Greenwich.

I’m sure that I will be corrected is this is wrong but here goes, the longest city centre in the U.K. running from Lady’s Bridge to Moorfoot.

Your probably right Crookesey,

Although I wouldn't class Lady's Bridge and Moorfoot as being part of the City Centre.

Yes I’d go for the bottom of Pinstone Street to the bottom of High Street, encompassing Angel Street, Church Street, Leopold Street and Norfolk Street.

However the ‘City Centre’ is the centre of the city, not the centre of S1.
