Unless the council start doing something to attract shops it won't be worth going

I would have thought Sheffield will be the first on 20 smaller jl like they promised

I agree partly  with that about the lyceum  not been able to take big shows

Limited in doing much to it

Sheffield was having a purpose built theatre where gullies  is now in the yes project  but its crying out for a decent sized theatre for amdrams too

How big would that be? Not trying to pull you up on anything, just a question out of curiosity.

Had a walk round town yesterday - thoroughly depressing

masses of closed shops / department stores  most of what are open arent worth going in.

junkies all over the place

people dealing drugs in plain sight

huge concrete road blocks dumped all over the place

litter strewn streets

won’t be heading back anytime soon.

There's remarkably low levels of litter in the city centre.

I would guess theres 20, tops, temporary concrete  blocks.

Only 20! it looks like they’re expecting an invasion.

Fargate has gone - just nothing there.

Debenhams gone, John Lewis gone.

Most of people walking round look like extras off Shaun of the dead.

There's a lovely shop on Chapel Gate selling Sheffield stuff n novelties wish she could be on Fargate ,she deserves to do well

Chapel Gate is shockingly empty .

I am of the age when you could drive up Fargate.

Presume you mean chapel walk.

Nothing on it is there? Same as fargate.

Never known it as bad in town - was pretty shocked to be honest.

Yes course it's Chapel Walk ,  brain fade.

For a long time the end of the Moor was ghostly quiet.

I would reckon it now has about 3 fold the foot traffic as Fargate.

The city centre is still convenient for many but Sheff can't resist e- commerce ,the days of a mass bus ride to town on a Saturday are long long gone.

It's a bit perverse that the core shopping st ,Fargate is so badly hit ,yet the fringes of the core The Moor ,Division St right up to West One and the former market area all have much higher occupancy rates.

I know at one time Fargate had one if the highest rateable values in England

From memory top 20 and the retailers we're telling the council it was squeezing the life out of them.

I visited the Moor on Saturday for the first time since last July and found it comfortably unchanged apart from some chain store closures. Thankfully Sheffield’s own Atkinsons remains alongside most of the outdoor market stalls and there did seem to be less people under the influence of substances.  Lovely corner cut beef joint from Slattery’s market butchers with veg from assorted greengrocers resulting in a lovely family reunion post pandemic Sunday dinner

In my opinion shops are not the answer, the majority of folk using the city centre live/work in it, they don’t need to shop in it, what they do need is to eat, drink and be entertained in it. No one with any sense is going to think that they can succeed where iconic retailers have failed, best  brace yourselves for the demolition of units that can’t be rejuvenated.
