It was you that brought NI into this conversation, now you say its not relevant!

It is not relevant to your argument!

Okay to conclude you believe the most wealthy should behave like Sugar Daddies in order for the retirement age to remain the same and to keep free prescriptions for all over 60's.

Sugar Daddies?  Just where did they get their sugar?

.... and I suppose if they couldn't pay for it, then they'd either live in pain or with preventable disabilities, or simply die off, thus again saving the country £millions.

Of course, simply selling off the HNS to anybody wanting to buy it (the US have been slowly getting inroads into it over for years) would save even more millions a year on taxes, and a one-off windfall for the Government of the day.  Oh, and the average age  would fall as people die earlier as they couldn't afford the medicine, so fewer people would be claiming state pensions, saving even more.

Yep!  As I said at the start of this thread 'going backwards'!

Should we also apply that reasoning to non emergency NHS treatment as well?  We could stop treating the obese, the smokers, the addicts, the drunks, the depressed, the infertile etc and save even more!

Why not go the whole hog - do away with the NHS (it is a socialist policy after all), all welfare benefits and bring back the workhouse!

Exactly, this ties in neatly to the idea of people working from home (very popular under lockdown - if workers are at home, make them work from there), and the lowering of costs for businesses (no need for offices etc).  Live-in workhouses are the natural extension - free food and lodgings (and maybe medicines?) if you work 50, 60 or more hours a week for your keep.

Run into debt or can't pay court fines?  No problem - Work every Saturday and Sunday for a couple of pounds an hour as a weekend workhouse member until you are back solvent.

It's a funny old world.

I'm leaning towards everyone - kids, old people, diabetics - the lot - have to pay for their prescriptions. £300m worth we waste each year - it will focus minds if they had to pay for it.

We should ditch giving old people free entertainment, before we charge people to keep themselves healthy.

The reality is if the Government taxes the super wealthy too much then the super wealthy move their tax liabilities away from the UK and the treasury has less revenue as a consequence.  Instead of targeting super wealthy individuals the way forward is to ensure global companies such as Amazon pay more taxes in all the countries they operate in. I understand the G7 are seeking to ensure global companies do contribute more in taxes but that requires global cooperation in order to work.

So if I buy an Amazon product it will be me the consumer that pays the tax.

You the consumer will only pay the same amount of tax that you the consumer would pay if you bought the product from an alternative seller. The big losers are alternative real UK sellers who can't compete with Amazon and the UK government who don't collect enough tax courtesy of Amazon UK sales.

Whoever you tax, its you and me that end up paying. Who else is going to pay?

You may pay directly or you may pay indirectly via goods or maybe the profits of shares that you own in your pension.

If you mean the automatic free TV licence for the over 75s then I thought that had already been been replace by a means tested arrangement.

You will only pay VAT on the item though just as we all would do. Amazon in line with other corporations will (hopefully) also be paying corporation tax on their profits. They also help generate tax from employing people as those people will be paying income tax and NI, and VAT on most good they buy as well.

While the latter is true in order to qualify for a state retirement pension you have to reach the state pension retirement age which is at the moment 65. With an occupational pension that depends on the scheme you are in but again that is usually 65. It can be as low as 55 in some circumstances but that would be with a reduced amount.

66  these days.

You've really lost the plot. In Victoria times when there were workhouses people were expected to die in their early to mid 40's.  It's precisely because work conditions have improved as well as well as modern  scientific knowledge people are living longer resulting in more years spent in retirement for most people that the government of the day need to make changes in order to finance future state pensions and NHS supplied medicines. Nobody has suggested stopping welfare benefits meaning those over 60 who can't afford to pay for prescriptions will not be forced to pay for them.

No plot, just want a more equal and fair society!

So just funding old poor peoples entertainment, a step forward.

Do you think entertainment should be prioritised over other things?

It depends on what you mean by old poor people's entertainment and also what other things you are talking about that it should be prioritised over. That why I originally asked in post #62 if you meant the free TV licence for the over 75s. I myself don't have a TV licence so I can't really comment on that aspect only to say the people over 75 dont have much else in the way of entertainment to look forward to other than the TV, so it could also help with their wellbeing by watching it.

Having said that I do find it disgusting that a public funded organisation pays one of its presenters over £26,000 per week and many others nearly have a million anually.
