Guest #51 Posted March 25, 2023 Excellent piece here by Janice Turner in The Times about the decision by World Athletics to not allow trans women to compete in female categories: Seb Coe keeps the flame alive for women’s sport. Quote ... When sports bodies discussed “trans inclusion” LGBT groups dominated; yet women, with much to lose, were rarely in the room. When the veteran sportswomen Martina Navratilova and Sharron Davies demanded female representation they lost work and sponsorship, and faced vicious online attacks. But they endured this knowing that younger, mid-career athletes daren’t speak at all — except, in January, for the British shot-putter Amelia Strickler. You can see why: sex differences are enshrined in her sport. With women throwing a 4kg weight and men 7.26kg, any mediocre male could lob the lighter put straight into the female record books. Strickler’s courage emboldened a handful of others, including the Olympic sprinter Beth Dobbin. Yet on Thursday Coe said that consulted privately, the vast majority of athletes, federations and coaches were adamantly opposed to male inclusion. Note again the real fear of potential personal and professional fallout that comes from speaking out about issues relating to the necessity of single sex spaces. Brava to those women who find the courage to do so.
 Share this content via...
cressida 1,565 #52 Posted March 25, 2023 Heaven forbid it will get to the time when free speech will be limited to such an extreme degree that we won't even be able to say imo. I do support free speech except when people make e.g. racist and derogatory remarks and nasty put downs to those perhaps not quick enough to answer back.
