Anna B   1,414 #1 Posted June 3, 2021 I'm old enough to remember the outdoor Lido Swimming pool in Millhouses Park. It was packed in Summer and always very popular. Technology has moved on so I see no reason why a retractable roof for poorer weather isn't possible and if necessary sustainable thermal heating.  The nearest thing to an outdoor swimming pool these days is Hathersage, which is small and usually crowded when the weather is good. At one time outdoor pools were quite common, and I think we might be in for a resurgence, especially with global warming and wild swimming and eco considerations. Sheffield is a long way from the coast/sea, so I think it would be an asset to the city, attract visitors, and be something people would want. What do you think? l
 Share this content via...

Which would probably mean an entry fee to help pay for it and cover running costs. Edited June 3, 2021 by whiteowl
 Share this content via...
butlers   261 #3 Posted June 3, 2021 A lido for the city centre would be good ,Castlegate maybe. Could tap into the CHP from Bernard road.
 Share this content via...
Rollypolly   51 #4 Posted June 3, 2021 (edited) Yes it would be lovely. We used to take my son there and it was always really busy. All the parks were in those days. Hillsborough park had a boating lake which I used to love as a child. How come we have nothing like that in Sheffield ?
 Share this content via...

How come we have nothing like that in Sheffield ? Hi Padders, you too. We certainly could so with a Clifton park in Sheffield, in fact I think most parks are an underused resource with all sorts of opportunities for growth and improvement. Sadly vandals have seen the demise of no end of park facilities, so why not employ park keepers again, or better still park activity co-ordinators. We've seen during the pandemic how important are our green spaces.
 Share this content via...
Mr Allen   0 #7 Posted June 3, 2021 Lido returning to Millhouses Park? Won't happen, the reason it was got rid of in the first place back in the late 80s was due to vandalism by the local scrotes, same thing would happen again and the Council has neither the time or the funds to provide extra security around it and neither do the Plod.
 Share this content via...

What is needed is the drive to make it happen (are you starting a campaign?).  I was chatting with a chum about Redmires Reservoir the other day, not council owned, but a food venue there over looking the reservoir would be great (maybe I will start a campaign).
 Share this content via...

DavidFrance   19 #11 Posted June 3, 2021 I can't swim but I still think it should never have been closed. Definitely a good idea...and the same for Longley Park, too. Two is not going to be enough if we are going to have to live with "staycations".   Sponsorship deals would help. For instance "The Amazon" pool at Millhouses and the Tesco pool at Longley. Just two of the names that have taken billions from Sheffielders these last 18 months.
 Share this content via...
