Delbow 686 #1 Posted April 20, 2021 Finally, a little bit of justice for a Black man in America. You'd like to think that this is the beginning of the end for cops killing Black people without consequences, but there are still legal structures that make that very easy, as this article details. top4718 838 #2 Posted April 20, 2021 Chauvin got what he deserved but lets not make martyrs out of vile people like Floyd, justice has been served.
 Share this content via...
Delbow 686 #3 Posted April 20, 2021 I think it's irrelevant to bring Mr Floyd's character into it. The important thing is that people should not have to fear the police, but that is the reality for Black and brown people in cities across America, where militarised police forces act like armies of occupation. It shouldn't even be notable that a white police officer has been found guilty of murdering a Black man, but it really is notable because it just doesn't happen (until now). The_DADDY 3,456 #4 Posted April 20, 2021 Guilty of murder? I can't see that standing, it'll be overturned on appeal in my opinion.
 Share this content via...

Yes, 2nd and 3rd degree murder, and manslaughter. Why do you think that? I've been following the trial and, although it's obviously not the same as being there and hearing all the evidence, the evidence from the prosecution witnesses seemed pretty compelling, while the defence arguments were sometimes bizarre in their 'whataboutery' Edited April 20, 2021 by Delbow
 Share this content via...
The_DADDY 3,456 #6 Posted April 20, 2021 Ah, Second and third degree is different. You said murder which suggests straight up 1st degree.
 Share this content via...

He wasn't charged with 1st degree, but was convicted on all three counts that he was charged with.
 Share this content via...
The_DADDY 3,456 #8 Posted April 20, 2021 I haven't been following the trial so I didn't know that. Anyway, regardless of the outcome I feel america is set to burn. It's divided in a way I've never seen in my lifetime.
 Share this content via...

This bit is true, although hopefully with the white supremacist out of the White House things will become a bit less polarised. America probably would be burning right now if this trial had been a re-run of Rodney King. But policing in the US is a racialised disaster, and you have to think that Chauvin belived that he could suffocate someone Black while being filmed for over 9 minutes and get away with it, because his experience would have told him he could. Oh my god you had to play the "Trump is a white supremisist" card 🙄 This has nothing to do with Trump. He's gone for now so concentrate on the future 🙏
 Share this content via...

It'd be nice to see the beginning of the end of black people killing black people. Over 90% of black homicides in America are carried out by other black people. This idea that the police are going around slaughtering black people is nonsense.
 Share this content via...
