Residential Homes For Respite Care

Can anyone recommend a good residential/nursing home for respite care. 

 

I'm trying to help my friend whose wife has alzeihmers and other problems and he needs somewhere she can go to give him a break. He's spoke to his doctor who has said seen as there will be no social support(benefits), it's nothing to do with him!! Bit harsh I thought. 

 

So come on Sheffield people, get recommending please. There's no better publicity than word of mouth. 

 

They live at Lodgemoor but anywhere will do provided it's recommended as good

There's a list of Sheffield care homes with reviews written by residents and other interested parties like family.

Try the link below. There may be more from other sources if you look online, but remember it sometimes comes down simply to the availability of places and cost. It can be a bit of a minefield.

Adult Social services, as Jane says, is probably your best bet.

we found Alexander court really helpful and caring , not sure if they do respite but worth a try, manager is Bea or Andrea.

There are over thirty Care Homes in Sheffield.

Only some take in Dementia cases.

Only some provide nursing care.

Only some take on respite care.

Every Care Home will have reviewed their policies in the last 12 months because of Covid and its health and financial implications. Any recommendation based on experience that is over 12 months may not be useful and situations within homes can change rapidly even in normal times. You can visit on behalf of you friend- if allowed.

 

You can look up every Care Home in Sheffield at  Carehome. UK which is a highly respected as a source of pre-visit information. The site has all the links and advice you need except for what Sheffield Social Services can provide.

For example the review of the excellent Alexander Court Care Home does not mention Dementia- and it did not take in  Dementia patients three years ago. A phone call will resolve that problem.

 

Funding needs to be sorted out first, especially in the case of Dementia patients were  fees of £750-1000 a week are normal and the Home will often need a payment plan sorted before a place is offered.

It comes as a surprise to many that dementia alone, does not merit funding. I cannot comment at all on provision for Respite funding.

 

Having visited 15+ care homes with dementia provision three years ago,  I would only make one  two three very generalised recommendations:

Consider new purpose built homes first.

Consider homes away from S10* and S11 first.

The Homes in the area around the Northern General populated our top four places then.

 

*Just to make it clear Alexander Court Care Home would have been at the top of the list except that three years ago it did not provide dementia care.

As always very little help/advice available from social services or NHS if you are not on benefits and pay your own way. In normal times - not Covid times - I would always say visit unannounced to take a look round as it is minefield. Some are like large posh hotels and too unsettling  for dementia patients.

From personal experience I found that Broomgrove Nursing Home is excellent.

At all costs avoid Pingley Court Care Home which is absolutely atrocious.

Broomgrove does not provide cater for dementia need.

I was looking on Google for residential care places recently, found a place called Voyage Care up at Beauchief, reason I'm asking is I'm just turned 45 and have Asperger's and various other disabilities, and my Parents are both over 70 and are struggling to cope with me as I get very angry about the fact I can't get a job due to disability and various other issues, which Mum in particular gets very upset about when I get mad and start shouting and using bad words.

 

Therefore I'm looking at residential care as an option, especially seeing as at the moment I have a morning care company in who do my morning bathing routine on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and to put it politely some of the staff are worse than useless, like this morning right, she asked me what sandwich I wanted for lunch, I said cheese, so she made cheese AND Ham! I wouldn't mind but it's in the flippin' care plan that I have one or the other not both! And they frequently run the bath either far too hot or freezing cold despite the fact there's a note pinned in the bathroom from Dad to check the temperature with me before I bathe.

 

I've had discussions with the social about these and other problems but they won't do anything because the company in question are dirt cheap and the social won't pay for a better company!

Oh dear, sorry to hear it. But I wouldn't assume theses sort of problems will be solved in a care home, as they are often understaffed, overworked, and have troubles like everywhere else. Cost doesn't come into it either, as even the most expensive care homes screw up occasionally, (and some more than occasionally.) 

I understand your frustrations, but they occur for everyone. Maybe you could get some help with that side of things, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for example. There are some care homes that do specialise in younger people with certain problems. The only one I know of is Haythorne Place, near Sheffield Lane Top, but there must be others. I haven't heard of Voyage Care.

As far as I know, Social Services will only fund the first £420 per week of any care home package, the rest must be found elsewhere.

 

 

To qualify for a place in a care home you will have to meet certain criteria, and probably have a financial assessment, (these places are prohibitively expensive) unless you can pay all the costs yourself, which is unlikely. Places are scarce. As far as I know, Social Services will only fund the first £420 per week of most care home packages depending on need, the rest has to be found elsewhere.
