The European Super League (ESL) is a "disgraceful, self-serving" plan and a "spit in the face of football lovers", says Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

 

He would say that, because if there is a split he may need to take a pay cut. We have various different trophies and leagues, this is just another one.

As the world gets smaller, these days people can travel hundreds of miles to work, air travel is relatively cheap and bussiness is international.

It seems even Boris wants to be populist and he will do all that he can to stop this. These are companies organising their bussiness as they see fit.

Have we moved towads Maxism, where Boris controls when we can go outdoors and what bussinesses can do?

Its not the England football team, these are football teams owned by share holders.

People have been up in arms about the prospect of an ESL all day - complaining that it will no longer be the sport of "working man". I think that ship sailed long ago! The price of tickets is astronomical, and players in the top league are remunerated beyond the dreams of avarice.

The sentimentality is just sick making. 

I'd have more respect for the elites if they followed through with their anti nanny state logic, & stuck to fingers up to the public & said "tough tits. That's the market for you".

There must be loads of non professional football teams out there whose players all work in the communities whose teams they play for. People should support them.

This is a closed group, no matter how well they play the other teams will not be able to join. Coming bottom will  mean that team will  leave the league. Pretty much every game will be a mid table end of season game and about as exciting. 

 

It also appears that this will suck money from the wider game meaning the smaller clubs will likely fold. 

 

There also seems to be a story floating that players will have to give up any ambition to play for their national teams. No doubt they will be suitably recompensed for this, but the national sides will have a smaller pool of players to draw from, reducing those teams chances of doing well in competitions.

The cost of a mean in a michelin starred restaurant is astronomical but people still choose to pay it. People have a choice as to whether or not to pay for a ticket just as they have a choice to have a meal out in a michelin starred restaurant or the local KFC.

this wont change that, proabaly make it worse, at least for the players in the esl teams

It's a market which will be very much smaller and skewed very much in favour of the esl clubs to the detriment of all the others. In those situations in other industries, governments do tend to impose extermal regulation even if it's not very good regulation.

Perhaps they will, though whether those clubs will survive with less cash available is another matter and it's not just the playing staff whos livlihood is at risk, there is all the other staff who look after the grounds at risk too.

Heard a good one on tonight's 'Football Heaven' which just about sums it up. 

 

There's a tweet from someone doing the rounds which says, (paraphrasing); 

 

The year is 2037 & the European Super League, set up in 2021 has been a tremendous success.  However, half a dozen teams are not happy sharing the £500 billion per year with the other 14 teams & are now leaving to form the new 'European Super-Duper League'.

Unfortunately "A European Super League" will not save football, it will destroy even more..

Football has been on a downhill slope for years..

Ruined by the total greed of owners, players, managers and agents...

When you get all these people earning extortionate amounts of money for doing very little, eventually the finances will not add up and football will bankrupt itself...

 

Football fans should get their priorities right, stop wasting money lining the pockets of these greedy people, hopefully then football clubs and organisations will change and start doing things to win back the loyalty of their fans.

I read the other day that Paul Pogba, (his agent no doubt?) is looking for £500,000 a week to sign an extension to his Man Utd contract.  Additionally, the next big thing in football, 20 year old Erling Haaland, currently at Borussia Dortmund, is being chased by a number of European clubs & he / his agent are looking for £1 million, (no it's not a typo error), per week. 

 

I think the boat has already been missed on introducing salary caps, certainly for the English Premiership?

Totally agree.

The game in the higher echelons of European football has been awash with money,which then goes only in the direction of players,managers,agents etc.

Whatever money is generated by the ESL will go to an even more concentrated elite,who happen to be top dogs(and that is questionable) at this particular point in time.

A league with no jeopardy is soulless and meaningless to me.

Well according to a reporter on talk sport Chelsea and Man city could be starting to have second thoughts already. Hoping it goes ahead and they all get kicked out but I think it won't happen. I hope they don't bend over backwards to talk them into staying.
