Premiership Football & Sheffield - why can't the city sustain a Premiership side? 

 

We've both been there, United & Wednesday but both failed to make an impact long term, which seems incredible for a cith the size of Sheffield with two well supported teams. 

 

So why can't either team make an impact in the Premiership? 

 

Has it / is is mismanagement going back decades?  Is it the parochial attitude of only looking to ex-players as a choice for managers or only looking locally to other clubs in the South Yorkshire for managers & players?  Think Danny Wilson?

nothing whatsoever to do with the city it is all about the owners of the clubs

 

 

Anyway look on the bright side as they drop down the divisions there may well be less trafic disruption on match days

The brutal and unpopular truth is that  Sheffield is not a big enough city to sustain 2 clubs 

 

One big club like Leeds and Newcastle and you would get 45,000 at each game and a team that could make it in the prem

 

Sadly Sheffield probably could not maintain 2 championship sides for a long period of time

It's an interesting theory but Liverpool is a smaller city than Sheffield and they seem to do OK.

But Bristol don’t. Birmingham struggles to.  Nottingham does worse than Sheffield.
 

The top and bottom of it is that there are only 20 premier league clubs. The money that has poured into it over the last 20 years guarantees that 10 clubs will never go down. So, breaking in is hard, staying there is harder.

My bold. 

 

I have a different take on things.  I think it's much harder to beat 21 other clubs to get out of the Championship than to stay ahead of 3 clubs & remain in the Premiership.   (Perhaps I should have rung BDTBL with this theory at some point this season?).

Not sure that's true to be honest. Stats also make Sheffield bigger than Manchester. The population of Merseyside is much bigger than South Yorkshire but only has three professional clubs as compared to SY with 5. Greater Manchester is also much bigger, the population of Manchester is less than Sheffield, but Trafford, Salford, Tameside have big populations.
