A6178 Attercliffe Road Traffic Improvements

Recommended Posts

Sheffield City Council are now consulting on the latest phase of the Transforming Cities Funding, which now includes Attercliffe and Darnall. Major improvements are planned along the A6178 and other local roads around the area.

The main points are:

- Removal of the through traffic lane at Furnival Road onto Effingham Road and Derek Dooley Way (from Attercliffe). This will be replaced with a cycle lane only.

- 20MPH speed limit along the busy A6178 through Attercliffe centre, between Stevenson Road and Newhall Road

- New bus lanes along Attercliffe Common between Coleridge Road and Arena Square in both directions (close to Ice Sheffield)

- Segregated cycle lanes along the A6178 through Attercliffe centre

- Segregated cycle lanes along Effingham Road

You can have your say/leave feedback and view the proposals online at: https://connectingsheffield.commonplace.is/proposals/darnall-attercliffe-city-centre

BUMP. Don't forget to have your say before the consultation closes.

What are your thoughts Michael?

I know Stevenson road-where the old Northern power tools is. How far would you say it is up to Newhall road. I'm just thinking that 20mph is quite slow, but it depends on whatever else will be going on in the vicinity.

Edit: Just gone through the proposals. There appears to be a technical hitch. The system just remains on 'saving' and does not appear to complete.

The issue I have is how many people use this route to cycle or walk through and how many people are they expecting.
It's an awful run down area and is sometimes not safe to drive through never mind walk or cycle through.
Where does the cycle / walking route lead to, Meadowhall again.
Now if this was proposed along the London Road and Abbeydale Road corridor where people actually live then it would make more economical sense.

Quite a lot of cycle traffic through this area, along Effingham rd, and attercliffe common in a morning. Less through darnall I think.

Agree on the London and Abbeydale rd routes though. Both horrible to ride along by bike, and both are nice flat routes to Town.

Really? When is that area not safe and why?

Dark, dingy and run down.... and a few dodgy looking characters hanging around.

Hopefully an injection of money will create a more attractive area and the dodgy looking characters in their dark, dingy and rundown cars will stay away.

Surely an injection of money and investment in the area will come if lorries and cars are able to access the area pretty easily ?

It doesn't 'lead to' Meadowhall any more than it leads to the city centre? There are a number of schemes in the Connecting Sheffield project that are in other places in and around the city centre, and although cycling schemes for Ecclesall Road & London Road themselves aren't part of that, those two roads are going to be getting a bus-centric overhaul in the long-term. What that will look like - not sure.

You build the infrastructure for what you want, not what you have. It's a key part of the council and private developers plans for the area that industrial traffic and the majority of private motor vehicle traffic (that are mostly only passing through) is kept away from the high street area, giving over space for traffic calming, active travel infrastructure (cycle lanes, pavement improvements) and public transport improvements.

It's been an easily accessible street for cars and lorries for decades and all that has done is pretty much kill of any potential the area has for regeneration.

There are developers waiting to move ahead with a some large-scale, key residential developments in the nearby area who are waiting for Attercliffe Road to be improved in this way. That's not speculation, there are big developments already in the works behind the scenes. And when you talk about injections of money, property development is the best way to bring £££s in to the area. There are jobs in the area too, and no one is saying all industrial/warehouse premises need to be removed, it's just that their access into and out of the area is going to be adjusted so as to keep it off the primary high street.

It is an excellent idea, the city is desperate for more safe cycling infrastructure and this route is crucial.

This route takes you from the city to the EIS, Centertainment, Ice Sheffield, the new Olympic Legacy Park, countless of businesses and shops... Currently to reach these destinations you have to use roads dominated by vehicular traffic for no apparent reason.

"Road Traffic Improvements"

really??  Someone has a sense of humour

I agree with Dary just how many cyclists and pedestrians are there that use the roads there and if that if one was look at priorities then London Road area would be far higher up the list
