Sorry to hear of your predicament, Spider. Not much of a reward for a working life of hard graft. Because of COVID there are about 4.5m waiting for hospital treatment and that number is predicted to double. I think your only way out is to go private if you’re in a position to do so.

4.5 million on the waiting list is a lot. However, some departments  are dealing with patients quicker than other departments.

@spider One method of speeding things up a little is to pay private for the consultation, then get the operation on the NHS. That would be a sort of compromise.

My friend has terminal cancer, and she hasn’t had any letters to rebook an appointment. I know they can’t do anything but it’s the principal of the thing.

Spider,

A referral from your GP to the specialist of your choosing is usually required. For example, if Thornberry hospital have the type of specialists that you require, you could try there.

Personally, I would want to establish that the specialist would be willing to see you privately but do the operation at an nhs hospital. Otherwise you would be wasting your money on the consultation.

Alternatively,  if he does not do nhs work, he may be able speed up your nhs operation by providing a letter after a consultation. Detailing the severity of your health issue, and the need for an element of urgency

These are the numbers I have for Thornbury from 2017.

Appointments: 01142664455

Other: 01142661133

There  is also Claremont hospital:0114 263 0330

Can your Dr refer you to a different hospital?

If you feel up to it, I can only suggest you explore all options.

I would think that a letter from a consultant surgeon may  carry a bit more weight than your GP . However, I wouldn't  ask him to write to the guy  that your GP has been wring to.

At the moment you have not explored the option of whether a consultant at Thornbury would be able to do an operation on the nhs.

I do know that some surgeons work privately and for the nhs .

Quite often, the £50 consultation at the Thornbury, or elsewhere, is with the relevant surgeon who sticks you on his NHS list (assuming the level of need is met).

This can avoid the runaround where they force you to pass through the physio charade before accepting that you may have been right all along. 😷

Depends, my other half is due some non-critical surgery and has so far had to wait 6 months. They've moved to cancer related and urgent/critical ops at the moment from what we were told. Still waiting for the call back to say when she can go in.
