How rare that a politician keeps their promise ! Because politicians ALWAYS keep their promises don't they ? "no option but to accept it" really ? He could have said the result wasn't "legally binding" How many politicians do you know ? Most senior Politicians in recent times have joined the lucrative speakers circuit. How do you think "call me Tony" and Gordon "Golden" Brown keep busy ? Voting isn't compulsory and shouldn't be in a true democracy. What if enough people spoiled their ballot paper ( as they were annoyed at being forced to vote ) resulting in the "yes" or "no" getting less than 51% overall ? ( 45% yes , 45% no, 10% spoilt ballots ? ) What happens if it's not a yes/no referendum but a general Election with multiple "options" ? Every Political party that has won a general election and gone on to form a government in the last 30 years has done so with less than a 45% majority. Meaning over half of voters didn't get the government they wanted. Democracy is far from perfect, but until something more representative is created, it's all we've got.  Do you have a link to that info ? I'd like to see the figures.  thanks Yorkshire and humberside got £747m between 2007 and 2013. If you think that's going to continue you might want to think again.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36420415
 Share this content via...
AKAMD   0 #38 Posted March 8, 2021 Prior to that, South Yorkshire got £820m Objective 1 money and a further £605m was penciled in for 2021-2027. The £820m was matched with UK funding, e.g. Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) and Coalfield Regeneration Trust (CRT), as well as private investment that it levered in.  https://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/archive/country/commu/docoutils/o1_south_yorkshire.pdf
 Share this content via...

It was always our money in the first place which Europe was handing back for schemes they approved of. Boris can do the same but don't hold your breath. AKAMD   0 #40 Posted March 8, 2021 The EU funding is distributed around the poorest economies in Europe, three of which were South Yorkshire, Cornwall and Liverpool. Boris is distributing cash to Richmond for example. I know there are pockets of deprivation within affluent areas but by comparison there are greater areas of need. As for the EU backing schemes they approved of, Objective 1 was administered by a local organisation based in the Dearn.
