Apple cap the version of iOS (and macOS) which you can install on older devices. Older devices tend to struggle at running later versions of the OS (as they don't have the CPU power etc). You may be able to jailbreak and force a newer version of iOS on an older device; I'm not sure if that's possible, and assuming it is, it may not be great idea (could make your device sluggish and unresponsive etc).

I have an iPhone6s, which is on iOS12.something. I can put 14.something on it, but decided against it, and I'll just get a newer device (iPhone SE 2020 probably, which cost around £400 I think) instead.

Hope that helps.

My previous iPhone 6S updated OK. If yours won’t update automatically you can do it via iTunes.

The iPhone 6 is at the end of support, the latest OS it will run is 12.5.1.

But it is still receiving security updates.
