Wonderful. At last something the British can show the rest of the world how it's done.

Bring back colonies, exploitation, land  grabbing, extinction, permanent ecological damage, empire, war, slavery, criminal transportation "If it's financially worthwhile". Lets spread out across the Solar System an the Galaxy spreading exploitative capitalism "If it's financially worthwhile".

Let the travel industry organize trips for billionaires to graffiti Saturn's rings "If it's financially worthwhile".

Capitalism at its worst.

To be fair, I think Anna wrote that with cynicism not from the view of a Capitalist with a big cigar.

Here's a project to build a space ship

https://www.buildtheenterprise.org/

90 day from Earth to Mars.

Far fetched, not a bit, in 50yrs the young generation will look back and laugh at the primitive devices we had.

Just as I do now, when I was a young lad,

Mobile phones,

50 inch+ televisions,

microwaves,

Self driving cars,

Artificial intelligence,

The list is endless, unheard of back then.

Bluddy hell I used to start my car with a starting handle.

None of which could be made without earth's natural elements.

In fact, scientists say these will become scarce, as generations look to keep updating phones, televisions etc.

the elements won't disappear, we'll just have to get better at recycling

It's unlikely they'll find anything of any consequence on Mars IMO, if there were HG Wells style Martians, surely they'd have come by now? Maybe they have :D

Now made 5grams of oxygen on Mars, enough for an astronaut to breath for 10 mins.

Amazing!

Another giant step for colonizing Mars.

Hmmm...

For the benefit of those of us who may not be up to date with modern scientific practices, I wonder if one of the forum pointy-heads could fill us in with how you might go about weighing oxygen...

... I don't suppose a balloon and a set of bathroom scales would work? :suspect:

That's what it say's on the BBC teletext service.

Now unfortunately I'm no pointy head, but I'm sure Alco could explain..

I'm turning into a pointy head.

1 cubic meter of oxygen weighs  1.429 KG.

Howse about that.

It's all about mass.

Every atom has mass.

Each element has differently configured atoms and so a different mass.

Every compound is made up of elements in a specific ratio.

If you know the chemical formula of a compound and its mass you can work the mass of each element.

In a chemical reaction you start with known quantities and their masses.

The total mass after the reaction is the same.

Knowing the amounts and chemical formula of what is produced gives you the mass of each compound.

The number of atoms of oxygen released as molecules can be theoretically calculated and the mass calculated.

The difficult bit is that awareness of "weights" predates scientific explanations.

On your bathroom scales a spring is squashed  by a force.

That force is your personal set of atoms, your body mass, being pulled by gravity.

As gravity changes so does your weight on the bathroom scales but your mass of atoms stays the same.

Confusingly your mass and weight on Earth are the same and measured in stones,  kilograms, tonnes etc.

Everywhere else your weight will change and because your weight is a force it will be measured in Newtons.

This also explains the creation of Conspiracy Theory.

It's all fascinating stuff...

Just been watching the drone flying on Mars..

Flew for 5mins, when you consider the first flight on Earth lasted 12 secs it shows how much progress has been made.
