Plan To Remove Sheffield Rail Link To Manchester Airport

Also don't forget that some people in the North have the opposite affliction as some Southerners, some Northeners won't go further South than Birmingham, by the same token, some Southerners think anything North of the Watford Gap's on another Planet! :loopy:

If a northerner does not wish to venture south to catch a plane that is entirely their problem and not an excuse to build a white elephant of an airport in Doncaster

Volker Rail have released a statement saying that they have got the money for the £85 million contract for the resignalling, the loop at Bamford the junctions, new track and platform at Dore-The much delayed Hope Valley Capacity scheme.

The timetable of work is for completion in 2023.

They do mention the third fast train an hour to Manchester and a 40m journey time

Andy. I was under the impression that platforms at manchester airport can take  eight carriages trains. That means  3 car trains or even better two 4 car trains.

The problem is more than one train is scheduled to share the platform, make one of them longer to take up the full platform length and there is no longer a slot in the timetable for the other train.

Just to mention the public consultation closes tomorrow - if you have an interest in train travel to Manchester and an opinion one way or the other do take part!

bearing in mind the consultation is not about Sheffield to the airport but a far wider issue about improving the performance of rail services in and around Manchester then I am afraid our voice is unlikely to have much impact on the bigger picture and that I would be very surprised to see this service continue as it it is too disruptive  - sorry just being realistic here

The Government have announced that the Hope Valley Capacity scheme will go ahead

1 Two platforms at Dore

2 Better time keeping with a long loop at Bamford for passing trains.

3 New signalling may have been dropped

Indeed but is separate from the consultation regarding the Airport train and will not have an effect on that

The Hope Valley Capacity Scheme is real, exists and when completed will directly effect the timetable of all trains between Stockport/New Mills and Salford from December 2023.

When complete HVCS  will allow diverted traffic caused by the work on electrification of Leeds to Manchester route.

When these works are completed there will be a major recasting of all the timetables in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Humberside.

The "consultation"is not coming from Network Rail but they will like it as it will lead to a reduction in services,  needed because of failure of the Ordsall Chord and TransPennine electrification.

These events are concurrent, linked and another thread would confuse.

Agreed, the old north south divide again, boring, boring. Where is the rail link to Doncaster Airport from Manchester??? Doncaster Airport is not the worth space it occupies. Too small, a pointless exercise.

Why not just run the tram on the network rail out to dore??? Like they have to Rotherham?

The Rotherham link was an experiment - it required special new trams that can run on both rail types, and lots of faffing about with signalling and so on. It also runs just on a short length of freight line. A Dore link would have to run on the main line and compete with all the local and intercity train services. It would also require electrification of the line between Sheffield and Dore.

So that isn't going to happen any time soon.
