Alky   10 #1 Posted February 2, 2021 (edited) Hi, Can anyone tell me what type of video file is able to be read from home burnt DVD's? I have tried to copy some home movies with extensions of mp4, MKV but the dvd player does not recognise them. The disks are DVD+RW - is it the disks that are the issue except the player does say it will accept them.  I bought Roxio DVD burner but that did not help either. Thanks. Ghozer   112 #2 Posted February 2, 2021 You dont just drop an mp4 or mkv on a DVD and stick it in your player... You need to 'convert' it to DVD format, most Writer software will do this automatically when you chose to create a "DVD Video Disk" etc - drop your mp4, mkv or avi files etc, it 'should' auto convert them to fit them.... don't forget to create/setup the menu and chapters too
 Share this content via...
Alky   10 #3 Posted February 2, 2021 Thanks Ghozer - much appreciated. I had tried with Roxio but it or I failed - will try something else - any recommendations?
 Share this content via...
apelike   10 #4 Posted February 2, 2021 Most DVD players will accept and play other formats as well as the DVD ts/vob format.  I presume you mean a DVD player as opposed to one you may use in a PC or laptop so have a look at the manual for the DVD player to see what video files it supports playing and also what the audio is as some players are fussy .Normally for files with the MP4, MKV or AVI extension you just need to copy or drag and drop the files into the burning software and burn it as a data disk but you may need to change the audio format to suit.  I used to use this:  https://cdburnerxp.se/en/home   Otherwise its as Ghozer says in that if you want a proper DVD it will need to be converted to the DVD format either by separate software or the burning software itself. alchresearch   214 #5 Posted February 3, 2021 (edited) If you want a free program to make DVDs from video files, I use this one a lot:  https://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-author/  Or you could get a newer DVD player that supports MP4 video files, either on the disc or on a USB stick:  https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertainment/dvd-blu-ray-and-home-cinema/blu-ray-and-dvd-players/logik-l1dvdb20-dvd-player-10198524-pdt.html    Edited February 3, 2021 by alchresearch
 Share this content via...
swarfendor437 Â Â 14 #6 Posted February 6, 2021 Hi, Â Take a look here: Â https://listoffreeware.com/best-free-avi-to-dvd-converter-software-windows/ Â I would also take a look at winff for file format conversions (it's free). When I tried downloading at work a few years back it thought it was a virus! It isn't. I use it on Linux and it is quite easy. i would also take a look at imgburn for burning. Â https://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?/topic/8219-how-to-burn-a-movie-to-dvd/ Â This guide should help. Nicely laid out: Â https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3061/burn-any-video-file-type-to-play-on-a-dvd-player/
 Share this content via...
Alky   10 #7 Posted February 6, 2021 Thanks everyone - apologies for not replying sooner - our dog is very poorly.  I have tried imgburn and the dvd player is brand new - it says it will accept the discs I am using. I will give winxdvd.com/dvd-author a try  Cant understand why the player is rejecting the DVD+RW discs or is it the file format? Will try again in the morning assuming our pooch has a good night and I am not on the sofa with him all night again......
 Share this content via...
Ghozer   112 #8 Posted February 7, 2021 (edited) That could be your problem, if you are using "+" disks... they are generally designed for data, and not use in DVD players... ALL dvd players will accept "-" and only some players will accept +/- disks.. (100% accept - disks, approx 80% (or less) accept + disks) then there's the other fact it's a ReWritable, some players wont read these properly... AND, you have to end/close the session after each use, you can't just write to it, use it, write again... have to make sure to close/finalize... The main difference between - and + is... DVD-R discs use tiny marks along the grooves in the discs, called land prepits, to determine the laser position. DVD+R discs do not have land prepits, but instead measure the "wobble frequency" as the laser moves toward the outside of the disc.
