House Location For Starting A Family In Sheffield/Rotherham/Barnsley

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are starting to think of locations to buy our first house in the Sheffield/Rotherham/Barnsley area as we’ve both recently got jobs in Elsecar & Rotherham (by Magma) but are torn between staying around Huddersfield (where his family and friends are) and Sheffield (where some of my friends are planning to move to). Does anyone have any recommendations of areas to consider or avoid?

Ideally we’re looking for something out of the city centre (we’ve lived around Ecclesall Road and Hunters Bar areas when we were at university) which would be a suitable location for when we start a family. We have lots of family and friends in Huddersfield/Calderdale so we’ve so far thought of looking into Penistone/Stockbridge areas so we can get the best of all worlds with commute, distance from family and still being able to access the city centre. Saying that we don’t really know the non-student areas of Sheffield well and don’t know Rotherham or Barnsley at all.

At the moment our budget is looking to be around £200K max for a 3 bed semi which is probably a lot to ask for a lot of areas and will probably end up being the deciding factor of whether we stay put or move towards Sheffield. We’re luckily in a position at the moment where if it’s not going to be possible to find something within budget we can stay put while we increase our budget.

Elsecar is reasonably priced ,near to work surrounded by lovely countryside within easy reach of family seems an easy choice.

Also has a train station  No idea of school quality.

Bit left field maybe, but Wickersley/Bramley nr Rotherham is nice, not expensive and schools around there used to be good (may have changed in recent years). It is 2 minutes from M18 which gets you to Sheffield, Meadowhall and beyond quite quickly. Not so handy for train stations mind

Second being near family if you plan to have kids, we did that and its saved our bacon many times having granny a few minutes away
