Linux And Mac File Xfer Over Network?

Recommended Posts

I have a Linux (mint) laptop and a Mac (big sur) on the same network. What's the best way setup so I have transfer / access files between them? I was doing some kind of sambashare thing, but it's gone a bit haywire! :(

I am quite aware Mint is a version of Linux, plus MacOS is a kinda Bespoke Linux they Mac have created.

I had a friend who was a Mac specialist , who made Mac Clones on Intel mobos which seemed to transfer files fine between different platforms?

I personally would try by using a Mac formatted Hdd or Zip Drive 100/250Mb or Flash Drive to transfer the files manually.

I may be selling some later after formatting these.

You could use something as simple as a FAT32 formatted USB stick to transfer files between the two computers, or if you really want to use Ethernet, then enable SMB file sharing on yer Mac, and the Linux box can be the SMB client.

Is SMB file sharing still in System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing ?

I've not used a Mac as an SMB server in years . . .

Thank you both for your suggestions.

I can transfer files using an external (e.g. thumb) drive, no problem. I'm looking to have something where I can transfer files over the network.

Is SMB the best way to go? I'm sure it can't be all that hard, just came up against a few road blocks with it..

Run an sftp server and use sftp to transfer files? Alternatively sync a folder between the machines using rsync or syncthing

Nope, Mac OS isn't built on Linux, it's derived from Unix, specifically BSD..... But it's a long LONG way from that now!

And yes, a Samba share is probably your best bet, On your Linux Machine, setup a standard Windows/SMB share folder, then just connect to it from ur Mac as you would for any SMB...

Thanks Ghozer, all seems to be working now.

Originally, I was editing something like /etc/samba/smb.conf (something like that), but seems you can just change the sharing options on a per-folder basis.

Thanks again.

I wasn't promoting anything - just another solution that might be easier for someone visiting the thread? 😉
