Just answered my own question

https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/motoring-issues/2020/how-many-cars-are-there-in-the-uk/

40 million cars on the road as of April 2020

so 40 million will need charging, thats a lot more electricity usuage

National Grid bosses convinced it can keep up with a rise in electricity demand
If everyone in the UK switched to EVs overnight, peak electric demand would 'only increase by around 10%', a grid director said

We used to have an excellent public transport system in Sheffield at one time.

Regular, reliable and cheap.

What happened to that?

Cheap at point of use maybe, but expensive considering what was added to your council tax bill to subsidise it.

Swings and roundabouts...

What was it worth in terms of air quality and the environment?

Cast your mind back to those halcyon days,  Anna, without the rose-tinted specs. ONE of those buses - probably carrying two passengers (on some routes) created about as much pollution as 30 of todays' fleet .

I'm retired, so I wouldn't be charging at work, and who wants to spend 3+ hours shopping while waiting for a charge?

Not that it bothers me really, as I don't drive anyway, and my bus pass is due in about 5 months anyway.

You can do a quick charge (10% to 80%) on a Nissan Leaf  in 40 minutes.

Details here. https://www.drive-electric.co.uk/how-long-does-it-take-to-charge-an-electric-car/

Maybe, but (a) I don't drive (see above) and (b) don't particularly like that vehicle anyway.
