Growing Potatoes

Recommended Posts

I  love growing  vegetables etc.,  tomatoes are easy because I have used grow bags.

My question is regarding the best for growing potatoes. If I was to mix  25% of compost bought from a garden centre with 75% soil from my compost heap, and a handful of fish, blood and bone would this be okay, also would it do for growing tomatoes as well. ( I have an old cement mixer which would be great for mixing stuff together)

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that your mixture would be too fertile for your spuds and would encourage them to race away in the early stages of growth.

Forget the bought compost use soil to mix with your own compost (assuming it's well rotted )

The main worries are frost and lack of water

Feed with a high nitrogen fertiliser when the plants are about 4-5 inch tall.

Earth up as the plant grows

i grow mine, top class in old dustbins, with new compost and a bit of old manure,i also use some tomato feeds, get good results ,it also ensures that when finished ,the bin is emptied and new compost used each year.
