LenaRose 0 #1 Posted November 17, 2020 Hello everyone, We are currently living in Sheffield with my partner. I found a job in Rotherham centre which I really like and wanted to know if there are any good residential areas. I love Sheffield but don't want to commute long hours, so I would rather live somewhere close to work. I am a bit worried though, because I did a research online and couldn't find any nice areas close to the centre of Rotherham. Are things improving in the town? Are there any safe areas close to the centre? I found nice properties close to Eastwood and Clifton park, but again I am worried about the bad reputation of the areas. I wanted to hear from a local if things really are as bad as they sound. Thank you in advance for the advice, it is greatly appreciated. Ms Macbeth 75 #3 Posted November 17, 2020 Wickersley and Bramley are ok, lived there for a few years before I came here. Handy for the motorway too.
 Share this content via...
Thorpist 72 #4 Posted November 17, 2020 Like all places Rotherham has all types of areas the bad areas are not as bad or as big as the bad areas of Sheffield , likewise the the good areas are not as good or as big as they are in Sheffield. Just like Sheffield Rotherham has suffered from the out of town shopping centres. it is a pity that poverty is rife around the town centre due to political neglect and short sightedness . The people of Rotherham have not been well served by their leaders for a very long time, although things are slowly improving. The Amrc complex is one of the things in Rotherham that the council should be proud of. Hopefully the Man of Steel Sculpture which is planned for Rotherham will get off the ground. Rant over. Comparing properties of similar type in a comparable area you will get a better deal in Rotherham compared to Sheffield. May I suggest you start by looking for properties within your budget . Probably the best areas nearest to the town centre are located in the area past the hospital .
 Share this content via...

Eastwood and Clifton Park areas you listed are, imo, not nice in comparison to other areas of town. Those areas are where a lot of the non-british white population are based within the town (no comment on that before anyone jumps in accusing me of racism, its a fact). If you continue on that side going out of town Dalton has had a redevelopment in the last 15 years or you can head up towards Thrybergh which has a nice country park for walking in Most areas have reasonable links into town so you could go the other side heading towards Kimberworth Park, Greasborough, Munsborough or Wingfield. If you have a higher budget then the likes of Brinsworth, Whiston, Wickersley, Moorgate may be more your scene. Or if you prefer a new build then the Waverley estate near the parkway might be more your thing. Not knowing what you like makes it difficult to suggest areas for you. there are a lot more different places near town which I havent listed but the best advice i would give is to go to where you are looking at and have a browse around. Actually, apart from the town centre and Eastwood, Canklow, East Dene and Ferham - most areas are pretty decent and very affordable compared to Sheffield's housing market. 20 hours ago, LenaRose said: Hello everyone, We are currently living in Sheffield with my partner. Eastwood is getting better, at one stage it was worst than Page Hall, but RMBC have turned the area around in recent years, a lot of the population have been allegedly deported and due to the new housing licencing processes, most houses are now empty. Still an area I would personally avoid however. Most areas in the inner eastern areas of Rotherham, are mainly council estates with high unemployment and crime. Doesn't mean there bad areas to live, just not the best. You get good and bad anywhere. Personally speaking, with close proximity to the town centre, I'd suggest either: Parkgate, Kimberworth, Greasbrough, Brinsworth, Moorgate or Broom Valley. LenaRose 0 #8 Posted November 18, 2020 Thank you very much everyone for your great suggestions! Much appreciated! You definitely put my mind at ease! I will start looking at properties to rent in those areas mentioned. Me and my partner are generally looking for an area that has good bus links to the city centre and is as lively as possible. My partner works from home, so for him it would be nice to look out of the window and see a lively place. Once again, thank you for the warm welcome! Parkgate or Moorgate is the better local areas to the town centre with more frequent bus routes. Parkgate - 8/8A/9/22A/22C/22X/218/218A/221 - roughly 20+ buses per hour throughout the day, Mon-Sat. Moorgate - 19/19A/20/26/27/29/29A - roughly 10+ buses per hour throughout the day, Mon-Sat.
 Share this content via...

ooops 10 #11 Posted December 2, 2020 Thank you for starting this useful thread Lena! We are also moving from Sheefild to Rotherham, for a job-related reason plus we couldn't buy anything suitable in Sheffiled for our budget ☹️. We wanted a Victorian house and for houses we thought were affordable to us in Sheffield we were outbid but who knows how much (we offered the asking price + 10% for three houses and were told winning bids were MUCH higher AND from cash buyers but we needed mortgage). We decided to look at Moorgate as it has nice Victorian houses but we are not sure what are the boundaries of actual Moorgate so i am a bit worried to buy in a bad area after all. Can Rotherham residents or specialists 😁 in the area please advice me on Moorgate Grove/Whiston Grove streets in particular? The houses are nice but they are close to not so good area (at least how I understand it) of Broom Valley Road. Is this area going up or down? Any problems with local residents or with youth coming from not good areas? Is it a safe spot to buy? Are these streets still classified as Morrgate or Broom? Any other information about the area would be really benefitial as we love the houses there but have absolutely no knowledge about the area and if it would be a good buy? Thank you!!!! Janus 28 #12 Posted December 21, 2020 (edited) @ooops The two streets you mention are cul de sacs off of the main Moorgate road. Located almost adjacent to the TRC 6th form college, and the Carlton park hotel. Approximately one mile from town. 4 minutes walk from a Tesco express which opens 7am to 11pm seven days per week. A ten minute walk maximum to the hospital. Going a little beyond the hospital there is the Queensway estate and the Kingsway estate. Only look at the properties on Kingsway if you have won the lotto. If 'new builds' are of interest to you, there are a few properties remaining on Heather Close-which is the next street along from Moorgate Grove.
