Current Waitiing Times For Orthopaedic Operations

I need my left knee replacing - I was cleared for surgery a year ago but when the surgeon realised I also needed my gallbladder removing he understandably would not touch me with a bargepole since I needed that doing first and (to quote him) "the gallbladder is a very dirty organ and I need to you be all healed from the removal before I will do the knee replacement.  He told me to wait three months after the surgery and re-present to my GP to make a fresh referral.  I've done this.

 

My question is this "Does anyone working in an orthopaedic environment in Sheffield have any idea how long I will have to wait ?"  I am not being impatient - obviously I am aware of the pandemic and the impact it is having on routine surgery but my question is simply so I can try and organise my life over the next 4 to 8 months (or longer).

 

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who has had their knee done recently as to how long it was before they were operated upon from the date of initial consultation.

 

My question is to do with managing my expectations rather than wanting it done yesterday.  I should point out that my question comes from a point of severe pain such that I cannot sleep even with strong painkillers and a deep understanding of the pandemic and the fact that people are losing those very dear to them at this present time  from this deadly (for some) virus.

 

Just to re-iterate - if I wasn't in such severe pain I would not even be posting this question at this point in the pandemic.

Prob 2 months from doctor to specialist then 6 months to opp

Be carefull which pain killers you take side affects horrible 

Still waiting hip hop been 2 months

Thanks very much for your reply Spider1 - I hope you don't have to wait much longer for your hip.  I had my right hip replaced 9 July 2018 and it has made a massive difference.  my recovery was very quick but I was very disciplined in my post operative exercises even though they were painful I did them to the letter. Regarding pain relief for knees - I use codeine (on prescription) but I've used it before and am fine with it - even at the higher doses although on the higher doses (when the pain is really really bad) I obviously don't drive.  I won't go into detail but the problems people usually have with codeine don't affect me.  Some of the others make me nauseous and I cannot take Ibuprofen because it shreds my stomach to bits (and I have asthma so not a good idea in any case).

I was due to have a back operation on the 24 September 2019 at NGH had to have more MRI scans ,put back till November, Surgeon then took up new post in Dubai.

Waited till June for new consultant ,telephone call. Had face to face in October and was told it would be done before Xmas and told to phone ops coordinator,phoned same day and was told no chance until January 2021, back in to see consultant who said they would sort it ,after 3 weeks not a word.

With the current state of Covid don’t hold out much hope

Over the last 18 months have moved or cancelled more holidays thanTui and Jet2 combined

more chance of winning lottery and flying to Dubai
