11 Nov 2020 Remembrance Day - Big Poppy Push - Help Required

Recommended Posts

URGENT REQUEST

Your help is required to assist The Sheffield Sea Cadets who are trying to cover a huge camouflage net with poppies made by hand from painted plastic bottle bottoms and top sections, in time for 11th November 2020.  The camouflage net will be draped over a building when completed. Trouble is they only have until  (say) 10th November then to complete it and are asking for help. Please get involved if only to collect bottles and/or collect/deliver bottles or poppies to and fro.

Please email John Daley at the Sheffield Sea Cadets on Email:  dc@sheffieldscc.org.uk   if you have some collected empty bottles to deliver to us, or to be collected from you, or if you have painted poppies to deliver or to be collected from you. Or if you need empty bottles to make into poppies. Please give bottles a spray over with Dettol or equivalent ant-viral spray, although all will be sanitised again before use by cadets.

Help is needed in lots of ways:

1   Save your clear plastic bottles of any size, don't throw them away. Get them out of your recycling bin. Drop off/ collection to be notified to John Daley on Email:  dc@sheffieldscc.org.uk

2    Make some poppies yourself from the bottoms of clear plastic bottles.  Cut the wavy or plain bottoms off the clear bottles up to an inch up the side, smooth off edges for safety, paint waterproof (hobby, acrylic or exterior paint) on the outside (underside) of the bottle bottom with poppy red paint (non water soluble/non toxic) which then shows through to the inside too. Leave the paint to dry fully. Then paint the inside centre area as a small black disk (again waterproof /exterior paint) the size of  1p or 2p depending on size of bottle bottom.

Poppies and bottles collection/ delivery from/ to  Rutland Road address above to be notified by emailing John Daley on Email:   dc@sheffieldscc.org.uk  who is on site 24/7

The bottle top section and cap can be used in a similar way too. See photos on Sea Cadets Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/sheffield.sea.cadets/

You only need to supply the painted poppies the cadets will do the fiddly rest bits. No knitted poppies please, only as above. See easy simple method used by cadets on Sea Cadets Facebook Photos

Otherwise for more time consuming ones see general Youtube demos for hints BUT simpler ones will result in faster production which they need. More than 1000 plus poppies needed to fill the net. Possibly more.

Appropriate paint can be obtained from hobby and craft shops, Halfords and DIY stores. Waterproof paint only as the net will be outdoors.

Please email John Daley at the Sheffield Sea Cadets on Email:  dc@sheffieldscc.org.uk  if you have painted poppies to deliver or to be collected from you. Or if you need empty bottles to make into poppies.

3    Please share this appeal for help far and wide in Sheffield.

4     Always socially distance if group making poppies.  Remember the rule of 6.  Remember to wear masks. Remember this can be done out in the open in a garden in fine weather which helps poppy drying process.

Come on Sheffield we can do it!  Get your friends and kids involved. All hands on deck!

Colourcraft  6, Carlisle Court, 555 Carlisle St E, Sheffield S4 8DT sells acrylic paint suitable for painting the poppies. Apparently they are very helpful.
