Baron99 775 #1 Posted October 6, 2020 (edited) The transfer window has closed & its revealed that to 20 Premiership clubs have spent a total of £1.281 between them. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54427701 Of course some clubs have spent more than others but it roughly averages out around the £64 million mark for each club. At the same time, the lower leagues in the English Football League (EFL), especially those in divisions 1 & 2 are possibly facing financial ruin, mainly due to absent crowds & loss of advertising revenue because of COVID-19. Wouldn't it be a great gesture if the Premiership set up a fund, primarily for divisions 1 & 2, to keep them going; say a million a piece? After all this is grass roots football we're talking about & this is where the majority of British players ply their trade & where often a number of the Premiership teams may find the talented teenagers of tomorrow & those who may have slipped through the net earlier? You only have to look at the likes of Jaime Vardy & Harry Maguire for examples of those who came through the lower ranks? While the Premiership clubs are in the same business as those in the EFL, they're hardly competitors but how many of them rely on buying players from the Championship, who in turn, rely on purchasing players from leagues 1 & 2? English football cannot allow clubs in leagues 1 & 2 to fail? Let's also remember that the English Football Leagues are also a training ground for British managers to get their experience. Since 2000 premiership has contributed £301-9m to grass roots football. For years 2016-2019 they contributed £71-4m.
 Share this content via...

But what I'm suggesting is a fund directly to support the EFL, especially those clubs in leagues 1 & 2. It was pointed out a couple of weeks back, think it was mentioned on 'Football Focus', that the weekly wage paid to one of the top earners in the Premiership could actually keep many of the league 2 clubs from going bust over the course of a season. In addition, I understand (listening to Talksport this morning) that around 70% of the £1.2B spent by the PL clubs went abroad. We can't expect the Government to bale football out when football is spending the money it has abroad.
 Share this content via...
