The Derelict Brick Building At Side Of Canal-Near Meadowhall Tram Stop.

I have past this building on many occasions. It is located on the right hand side of the canal if facing the direction of Sheffield. Just before it is the slope to the bridge that leads to Meadowhall tram stop. It is also just beyond the Tinsley viaduct.

 

There is no roof on it now. Difficult to say whether the roof was apex or flat. The style of the windows seem to be arch shape. Probably been derelict for quite some time-there is a tree growing out the top of the building.

  

Anyone know the history of the brick building, and what it was orginally built for?

Almost sure it was a train station building, somebody on the forum will no doubt confirm !

This is part of the Tinsley

 Wharf and pumping station buildings and was a very busy transhipment point between the narrow Sheffield canal and the much wider South Yorkshire Navigation .  The canal is always above the river as far as the motorway bridge and the refusal of the steel and engineering works to sell their water to the canal company, water was pumped uphill into the canal.

It was also the place where I bought my towpath cycle permit.

He doesn't say what exactly the building was, i think its on the right on this picture if so looks more canal than railway.

This photograph was published in the Telegraph:

The Tinsley South Station railway station is out of site immediately to the  left of  centre.

The Meadowhall South tram stop is on the left hand set of tracks toward the end of the straight.

Beyond which is the sharp  tram turn to meet with the set of track  going to the right  just behind our buildings.

The reinforcements on the canal bank when British Waterways operated a small depot here. Still do?

The building to the left, with the car in front of it, is the 'pump house' , which is still in use,  pumps water from the Don, up to the Sheffield side of the top lock.
