South Yorkshire Bus Service Needs Improvement

Recommended Posts

Due to such low passenger numbers, buses are passing stops not needing to stop for passengers to alight or board . They need to stand at time points  for time to catch up  surely this is the sign of a good driver, what annoys me is when they travel very fast between time points and then stand for ages at time points.

We want are Bus Service Improved Quicky, because you can never get to the place you want on time, because of the attitude towards bus passengers by the bus drivers, you want to get some where and you catch a bus on time, then all of a sudden the driver pulls into a stop for a cigarette or a rest then your way behind the time, but if the bus driver knew someone on the bus he would definetly not stop  like they do,it just shows the people in charge are not checking up on these drivers correctly, and the Roads in Sheffield full of cars because of there is not Trust at All in or Bus Service at All,we never had this before so why do these Drivers getting away with it to often, just had this today, driver  stops outside the Crucible for 6 minutes then gets to Queens Road and then stops for another 6 minutes, just wish  they realise people want to get home

Wow. I am not a big fan of the way that the buses are run in this area but this is complete garbage. I wonder if you have even looked at the times that your bus is due to arrive at your destination before mouthing off about running late.

As others have said that like the underground and mainline trains (and even the trams) buses run to a timetable and because traffic is unpredictable in an attempt to maintain timetables then there will be certain places where they are scheduled to wait if they are early.  Now where they could be criticised is unlike the tubes in London there is no communication from the driver as to why he is waiting showing a lack of customer awareness on the part of the bus companies. Now a bigger issue might be how well some of these catching up stops are timetabled and might be a valid question

There tends to be 2 sets of timings used when services are scheduled. Peak and off peak.

Peak timings are used during the day and generally are fairly generous to allow for outside factors

Off peak are not generous and are often ambitious particularly when on tendered services where a contracting authority wants value for money. These can be and often are scheduled to meet a need . For example if a route in real terms takes 1 hour and 3 minutes from end to end it will often be reduced to 58 minutes to allow the same bus to be used and keep the costs down.

Some operators (none round here sadly) have a third set of timings. Super peak. These are often quite generous to allow for rush hours and other predictable hot spots.

In South Yorkshire a slightly lazy approach is taken where drop backs are built in at terminals and buses get interworked between services.

This is quite lazy really and results in frequent non compliant journeys.

A fair comment but there needs to be balance. It should be the concern of any driver to not cause delays to other road users so when there are stretches of road that are narrow or no overtaking permitted a fair pace should be used and time points may need to be observed for slightly longer. After all, delaying traffic is the job of SCC dont want to tread on their toes.

At the moment we can be driving 10 mph and still have 10 plus minutes to wait. Even driving slow and steady so to get there to have no waiting time doesn't please everyone

Have you even read the replies above? They explain the reasons for your perceived 'delays'.

There's a camera right above the driver.

And yes drivers stop at time points regardless of whomever is aboard.

The only problem here is in your head.

Buses have always had time points.

Saw a report on Calendar tonight about extra buses being put on for when the school children return to school next month to aid social distancing due to increased numbers.

Now if the bus companies here in Sheffield adopt the London idea, it won't be a moan about them waiting at their timing points, you'd better leave your house a bit earlier to give yourself plenty of time for your journey, as you possibly won't be allowed on a bus being an adult at rush hour?

"Commuters will be banned from boarding every other bus on some busy rush-hour routes in the capital in order to give schoolchildren priority.

All I can say is think yourselves lucky that you have a bus service at all!  Many rural areas have lost their bus services over recent years due to central government cutting subsidies and greedy bus operators wanting only routes that show them a profit.  It is high time Mayor Dan Jarvis fulfilled his election promise and brought public transport back under public control, then we would have a transport system to meet the needs of the people and not just the service providers!  Of course this doesn't reflect on bus drivers, just their employers.

Exactly.

Many rural and even other city's have far fewer services than we do.

First Bus made a loss of £150m last year and with ever falling passenger numbers can only see things getting worse.

Check for what? There is a camera in the cab area to check for any wrong doing.
