That's just the city centre though, there are parts over 500m ASL.

hang on.

we can't pedestrianise parts of the city centre, because there's a moor-top near Ladybower above 500m ?

you'll have to explain that one...

Re Pinstone Street, and the affected buses.

There are plans in progress to work on Arundel Gate - including bus stops

There are plans in progress to work on Rockingham street - including bus stops, and 'Pound Park'.

in other words, they haven't finished yet (they've barely started).

for once, can we finish something, and give it a go, before we decide it's rubbish?

(see Castlegate, it's really nice! - does anyone want the buses back along there?)

The problem is the work on Arundel Gate and Rockingham Street to provide replacement bus facilities really should have been done before closing those on Pinstone Street and Leopold Street, not several years later!

Best and most intelligent post so fat on this 'current' bit of the topic. 👍

Do you mean joined up thinking and proper planning?

I think he does, but that is expecting a miracle - and we know those are fictitious.

The money that paid for the (current) changes to Pinstone street came from last years 'emergency travel fund'.  No-one planned for that, it was seen / taken as an opportunity to get started on the bigger picture.

If pinstone street stays shut to traffic then the bus stops on Arundel gate need work. I personally don't mind either way if it stays shut or they open it again. Pros and cons either way.

That's understandable for the short period when City Centre businesses couldn't open without social distancing arrangements being put in place, but a year has now passed and nothing has changed! Although the whole social distancing explanation in this case is laughable given the pavements on Leopold Street and Pinstone Street are wide and the temporary replacement bus stops on Carver Street provided at the time were on narrow pavements and the temporary stops on Rockingham Street aren't much better!

The problem is the bigger picture is not being seen and public transport has not been considered in the project planning!

Reopen Pinstone Street and Leopold Street until proper replacement bus facilities have been built on Rockingham Street and Arundel Gate, then close it again to start on that area of work.

The 'emergency' funds that were available last year were available immediately.

the follow-up stuff is coming from a different fund (TCF), that was only made available ... earlier this year (?) - and has to go through a more complicated (standard) application and approval process.

(i think the applications are now in, and waiting for approval .. ?)

hence the gap.

All too often with government funding the requirement to spend it now trumps the need to spend it wisely.

"South Yorkshire MP Alexander Stafford calls for new body to run 'abysmal' buses"

LINK  (Facebook)

Willing to bet that Mr Stafford would end up on any commitee/board set up to run this proposed new body...

Some of the comments are absolutely hilarious.

Bleating about how expensive buses are now (they are not, some of the cheapest in the country by a long shot), moaning that they can no longer get across the county all day for '34p'.

We have a body that is meant to do everything he wants, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. They're useless & don't do anything. Much of their charge has been sold off to private contractors

Operation & maintainence of bus stations - BidVest Noonan
Bus Stops & Shelters - Alight Media

Affordable fares - TravelMaster tickets are fairly cheap

Sorry but what planet are you on? Sheffielders want brand new buses, every 3 minutes with polite staff that will not object to being insulted and abused and a maximum 10p fare. AND a bus to every stop in the county from their front door. Everything else is just profiteering and needs stamping out
