State Of The Art Uni Building - Now You See It, Now You Don'!

Sorry if I've missed previous chat on this, but does anyone know the story on Uni building site on Witham Rd?  They demolished playing fields to build state of the art - last time I looked, work in progress. Came up Northumberland Rd today to see they are now pulling it down again. Waste of money, or wot?

This -   "The foundations have not been driven deep enough into the ground and excessive settlement of the building has been reported by the contractor"

 

So they are having to start again......

Remedial works have commenced on the scheme to deliver the Faculty of Social Sciences (FoSS) building for the University of Sheffield. The scheme is currently under construction.

BAM identified that there was settlement occurring in excess of that which would normally be expected in a structure of this nature, prompting us to conduct detailed investigations. These confirm a problem involving the piling of the structure, which are unusually complicated.

We therefore conducted a review together with our client and the expert sub-contractors involved: Mott Macdonald – structural engineers - and Cementation Skanska – piling contractor. This concluded the best course of action would be to partly dismantle some of the current structural frame – to the north elevation then rebuild it. Those works are now underway.

This action followed rapidly after identifying the problem and these remedial works are expected to take approximately eight or nine weeks. BAM is apologising to local residents around the scheme for any additional inconvenience this may cause. Materials in the current frame will be re-used in the scheme or recycled.

BAM is working closely with the University to determine the consequent delay to the completion of the new building which it is now anticipated would be in 2022.

At all times the building has been safe to all those around it.

BAM are no longer the main contractor and have been replaced by Keir (who originally had the contract).

Other contractors will continue on  the FoSS  project after 50% of the current building has been demolished.

I think it looks as if all the concrete frame is going - ie the whole thing will be flattened.

 

 

BAM most of the other contractors gone and the site having been cleared of nearly all there equipment and facilities and storage.

There is no shuttering of the exposed and unfinished areas which need more concrete pours.

Most of safety fences and netting is gone.

The North corner is down after formerly been shored.

The East corner will have gone very soon.

The West corner is shored up.

The South corner is party down.

Depends:

 

Who did the survey

Who did the engineering calculations

Who drove the piles in

 

If the construction company were working off dodgy plans that had been provided to them it's not their fault the structure has turned out to be inadequate.

Although if the original plans called for more piles and the construction company suggested it would be alrite to leave a few out to save money then they could well be on the hook.

The UoS claims the remedial work is at no cost to themselves.
