There’s another big hole on the other side of Northumberland Rd that has been subject to attempted development that was abandoned. There’s often a good reason why high value land hasn’t been built on.

A lot has happened in the seven years these articles were written. Some has been complete with much more in various stages of constructions.

This thread is about a private construction gone wrong.

Of course they knew there was a reservoir there... Their issue relates to not properly designing for that fact.

I've no doubt the issues will be resolved and in a decade or mores time people will have largely forgotten about this, but to refer to this as nothing more than a setback is a truly heroic stretch of positive thinking! Getting this far in to the build of quite a large building only to discover someone has screwed up so badly that it needs to be taken down again - that is quite a major setback. Even if the extra construction costs are covered somehow by insurance, the University are still going to suffer by way of this facility being probably 6-12 months behind schedule now?

This is about a private-developer scheme that hasn't been properly engineered/designed and so needs to be partly or fully taken down. How does that relate to the retail quarter situation?

Unless you are a qualified structural or geotechnical engineer you should really not speculate on matters you know nothing about. BAM are still main contractor on this scheme so those commenting that Kier are back on the job know nothing. Normally on projects like this the piling contractor is responsible for both the design and construction of the pile foundations, the engineers just provide the loads and performance specification eg what the maximum settlement should be. For those on this forum claiming the architects are responsible and not competent, HLM design multi-million pound University buildings all over the UK, have an excellent track record and years of experience on schemes like this. HLM will have had nothing at all to do with the supervision or design of the foundations, this responsibility normally sits with the piling contractor.
