The Labour Party - Part 2

Recommended Posts

Wasn't the clamour after Corbyn's & Labours humiliating GE defeat that what the Labour Party really needed in a leader was a Northern, working class background, woman.  Clearly the members didn't want that so Labour ended up with Starmer after the vote.

I'm also at a loss by some of the comments above in that it appears that the main criteria to lead the Labour Party is you have to be at some point a council estate pauper.

Thornberry has never been poor

Not so...

Her mother (a teacher) and father (a diplomat) divorced when she was seven, so she, her 2 brothers and her mother had to leave the family home and live the life of a one parent family on free school meals and food parcels.  They also had to have their 2 cats put to sleep because they couldn't afford them.  She subsequently failed the 11 plus exam so had to go to Secondary Modern school. These were her formative years and it must have had an effect.

She went to live with her father at 15, but he left abruptly to work abroad. She had to fend for herself and worked as a cleaner and a barmaid while she resat her O levels and did her A levels.

She went to the University of Kent in Canterbury to do a law degree, She held office in the students Union, She was called to the Bar at Grey's Inn, London, where she worked under Michael Mansfield (a hero of mine) as a human rights lawyer. Before wntering politics.

In 1991 she married fellow Lawyer Christopher Nugee, and had 3 children. Nugee later became a Queen's Council and later a High Court Judge for which he was knighted, that allowed her the title of Lady Nugee, but she never uses it.

Her political experience is wide and far ranging. She's been involved in several important campaigns, and has been trusted with a number of high offices. It's an extensive resume, you can read it all on Wikipedia if you're interested.

Now I'm not saying her father being a diplomat didn't help open a few doors, but the whole family sound like achievers. Her mother became a town Councillor and Mayor for instance, but her formative years sound difficultIt and not the sort of thing you forget.

Nevertheless  it gave her the polish that we seem to expect of our politicians (They never let Angela Raynor forget her humble origins do they?) and the sort of confidence you get from overcoming obstacles and winning.

I've looked a t several possible Labour Leaders, and she stands out. On a personal level I don't particularly like her, but that's just me.  At the end of the day, I think she fits the bill of a strong and competant Leader. A damn sight better than Boris anyway.

And the tabloid muck slinging continues.

Quote

Labour last night admitted it had lied about an event at which Sir Keir Starmer is alleged to have broken lockdown rules.

In a sensational U-turn, Labour acknowledged that Angela Rayner was also at the event on April 30 last year at which Sir Keir was filmed enjoying a beer with officials at a time when indoor socialising was banned.

But Labour weren't making the laws. The Conservatives were, and they  broke their own laws.
