The Labour Party - Part 2

Well, it’s the second by-election in a row that the Tories were expecting to win, but didn’t. That really shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s made all the sweeter by seeing Gorgeous George being so soundly beaten. It’s always good to see hatred so comprehensively rejected.

It’s not a resounding victory, but it is something to build on. Here’s hoping that Kim justifies the choice of the electorate.

A  2.9% swing from labour to the tories doesn't sound good to me

Galloway is an awful bigot and a generally atrocious human being who I would happily drop into a well if only his massive ego would fit in it. That's my main takeaway from this by-election

Agreed, the things I take from this are:-

Labour chose a sympathy vote candidate, ignoring their normal selection rules and still only squeaked in.

GG is a waste of Oxygen.

Lid Dems we’re irrelevant

Tories suffered due to Matt Hancock.

Democracy lost, mainly due to the dirty campaigns and the massive reduction in turnout, The electorate are being turned off by negative politics.

I'm not so sure the Tories were expected to win but there was a big chance that Labour would lose due to their vote being reduced because George Galloway stood against them with a dirty tricks campaign. The right person won the seat given the unique circumstances.  Not a good result for Keir Starmer.

I actually said that the Tories were expecting to win. That’s different to expected to win.

I’m  correct too.

Congratulations to Kim Leadbetter on her victory in a marginal seat.

It can't have been pleasant to have to have had a police escort while she was out canvassing, given what happened to her sister 5 years ago.

I'm also delighted that the far right candidates in this area lost their deposits, letting them know their hate isn't wanted, in that part of West Yorkshire anyway.

No doubt George Galloway will find another area to inflict himself upon, sewing his grievances without a thought for the people of Batley and Spen.

So Labour hold Batley and Spen by. Very narrow margin.

Tories second, and GG third.

Does this mean Sir Keir is safe ( for now).

How do Labour supporters view the result?

Are they relieved to hold the seat, worried by the narrow margin or annoyed that a leadership challenge may now be delayed?

I think every seat could be a lot closer and Labour need to campaign well in order to win. Galloway wont split the vote in every area, but then there are the Liberal Democrats and others.

A seat that was held by the Tories a good few years ago could clearly have gone either way.

The official Tory statement was that the election result would be very close which proved to be correct. Saying the result would be very close is different to saying they expected to win.

I would think the Tories were quite happy with the result, they had a 2.9% swing from labour to Tory, ok they didnt win the seat, but if the same swing happened in an election, they would gain even more seats, and this is when the Tory party are in utter chaos, if the labour party  didnt go for the sympathy vote, the seat would be another tory seat.

Anyone recall the Blairites saying "anyone leading the party other than Corbyn would be 20 points ahead" and here we are, they cant even match Corbyn, the labour party is in an utter mess with Mr Forensic

George Galloway's Workers Party of Britain got almost 22% of the vote and took almost all of its votes from Labour. Galloway can't stand everywhere in a general election so drawing conclusions from his  focussing on one constituency in a by-election isn't meaningful.

They’ve been out Corbyning Corbyn.

You seem pretty relaxed about them extending their power. Send them a  fiver, join them and see how you fit in.

No Galloway cant stand everywhere, but other people can, Labour lost Hartlepool which has always been a labour strong hold, and GG wasnt  even there, there is pattern forming here, i wonder what it is?

I will send more than a fiver if they implement socialist policies,

Why should i not be relaxed,  If starmer gets in very little will change from the  tory policy
