Divisions opening up for Starmer as a large number of Labour's MP's defy him & the Party Whip to abstain in vote on the Covert Human Intelligence Sources (CHIS) Bill.

The issue of the additional resignations don't look good for him.  Same old Labour problems.

Really though,  Asking your MP's to abstain indicates a very wishy-washy, sitting on the fence approach to politics & weakness.

Not really, there has always been a block of Labour MPs who vote in a way the leadership doesn't like, regardless of the leadership and  their outlook, It's one of the joys of being leader.

I imagine during his time as DPP and in the outside legal profession, he will have come across situations the Bill seeks to address and is one of the few people who has direct experience of the consequences both good and bad of it's implememtation.

Abstention can be a profound statement regarding a proposition. This might be no so profound, but it's a valid and worthwhile position.

Good old Diane, never fails!

Quote

She told BBC Newsnight: "You've got to remember that Keir had a project of his own to become the leader of the Labour Party.

I blame his mother for calling him Keir.

One problem with PR it gives parties with miniscule number  of votes disproportionate power, which often means extremists calling the shots eg. Israel, hence undemocratic

Israel isn't a representative example as it's going to have problems regardless of the electoral system - problems come from trying to combine a largely secular outlook with a lot of people with extreme religious views. Add in their issues with their borders with their neighbours, etc. and it's always going to be 'complicated'.

PR works well in Germany and NZ for example.

I thought everyone assumed that when he took the Manchester Mayor post. Step back from the Corbynista/Blairite squabbles and return as the unity candidate at some point in the future when it's all blown over. It doesn't look like he'll be trying to return any time soon.

He should have won in 2016.

Then we’d all be in a better place

A case of unfinished business because he lost the leadership contest and now flexing what little power he has against the Tories.  He really isn't that great, he loves a bandwagon.

As if things weren’t bad enough, you come along and remind me that Kate Hoey exists.

Labour  deputy leader reprimanded by deputy HoC Speaker for calling Conservative MP 'Scum' during debate.

Blimey.  You can take the woman out of Stockport but....?  What a showing up when the deputy Speaker singled her out & rebuked her.  Looked like a frightened 5 yr old.
