Coronavirus - Part Two.

I’m not sure that we have panicked. If you look at the US and Brazil, two places that didn’t lockdown properly  the figure are horrendous. Or compare Sweden and Denmark. Not locking down would have been a disaster for the UK.

Sorry but looking back I think panic is the right word.

.....The government deliberately set out to scare us all into compliance in the early phase of the disease, and that has seriously affected opening back up now.

I don't think so as any compliance came later. Wasn't it the government who first came up with  herd immunity idea as a solution first and then abandoned the idea? They then were spooked by the press reports coming from Italy and other countries and then realised that the dear old NHS could be overwhelmed and collapse under the strain. We then had the swift takedown of Boris which added to that panic.

We do need to get on with stuff, but not at any cost. Maybe we will look back and say that we over estimated the illness and over reacted to it. But that’s not the same as panicking.

What cost are you talking about? I know people have died due to the virus and also due to their own stupidity in not using social distancing etc and yet despite that less than 1% of the population have died as a result. We have panicked, and so have some other countries BTW, by proposing a track and trace app that is not compulsory so ineffective, we have panicked by introducing the wearing of masks/face coverings when they are also not compulsory for all so renders the idea useless. As the saying goes "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and track and trace and wearing of face coverings are just two of the weak ones in that chain. Sometime just because we can do things it does not mean we should or need to.

So. What do you think we should have done?

Discussing what should/could have been done now is useless unless people just like to argue as its no longer about that and solves nothing. What is important now is that we now know more about this and need to manage what comes next as kids need to go to school, people need to work and people want to socialise.

But, a few minutes ago, you were quite happy to state your opinions about what we didn’t do.

What should we have done? You even have the benefit of 20/20 hindsight.

Where did I state any opinions about what we didn't do?  Oh I see... I think you mean the bit about stuff not being compulsory....

As stated already, what we should have done is a pointless discussion even with the benefit of hindsight!

They were spooked by the Ferguson report who said 500k would be dead by August - the same man who previously predicted 2m would die of swine flu, further millions from foot and mouth and was sacked mid-lockdown for breaking rules to see his fancy piece.

Looks even worse if the population forecast 2025 is anything to believe here,

Yeah - it’s like something David Icke would write and people would rightly laugh at.

The problem here is that some people actually believe him saying it's "an illusion pandemic" because they don't see it around them. I have spoken to several people recently and am amazed that some also feel the same and think it a hoax. I don't BTW, just to put it straight.  What is a common reason in many is that they mention that they don't know anyone who has it or suffered from it. But when you put it in perspective it's a bit like the small asteroid set to pass earth soon which has a 0.4% chance of entering the atmosphere, but not to worry as if it does will possibly burn out and do no damage. Yet the chances of getting this virus and dying from it at the moment are not much different and we go crazy.
